Frescobaldi Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Tenuta Perano Rialzi 2021

Categories , , Tags ,

96 Points, James Suckling – 94 Points, Vinous

This was a slight runner-up to that insane Castello di Ama CC Gran Selezione San Lorenzo we offered last year, which finished with 99 points from Suckling and landed in both James Suckling and Wine Spectator’s Top 10 Wines of the Year. This is slightly less money, nearly every bit as impressive as that monster, and it out-pointed and outshined almost all of its more expensive peers in the 2021 vintage including two from Marchesi Antinori and Felsina’s ‘Colonia’ Gran Selezione all at half the price.

The 2021 vintage is one of those exceptional vintages in Tuscany that Americans are only now starting to catch onto, now that it’s almost too late. Suckling called this baby “Super tense on the palate, with a chewy, tight-knit structure, zesty acidity and refined, velvety tannins. Tense yet polished finish.”

Original price was: $80.00.Current price is: $59.00.

96 Points, James Suckling
A modern Gallo Nero with aromas of vanilla, strawberry ice cream, butter, red cherries and flowers. Super tense on the palate, with a chewy, tight-knit structure, zesty acidity and refined, velvety tannins. Tense yet polished finish.

94 Points, Antonio Galloni
The 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Rialzi exudes concentration, richness and power. Dark-toned fruit, new leather, chocolate, incense and espresso wrap around the palate. There’s a bit more sweetness and richness than in the Riserva, and yet the character of this Gaiole site still comes through nicely.

Frescobaldi’s story is one that is very closely connected with the history of Tuscany. Sitting just outside of Florence at the high point of the medieval old-town, the Frescobaldis  were previous patrons of major works in Florence, such as Santa Trinita Bridge and the Basilica of Santo Spirito.

For the last 700 years, they’ve been growing wine in Tuscany. Slowly and carefully they have purchased estates which have given them access to all sorts of terroir throughout some of the most prime locations in all of Tuscany.
