Freelander is led by Larry Levin (Quintessa, Turnbull) who continues to outpace the rest of the competition in terms of creating out unrivaled values throughout some of California’s hottest AVAs – some in Napa, some North Coast, Sonoma, Mendocino and beyond. Somehow, Levin managed to pull off a ‘Best Buy’ Pinot even last year in tough 2022 conditions. That speaks to the consistency of Levin but also, can you just imagine what he was able to do in a game-changing 2023 vintage up and down California’s coast. This is a big, juicy Pinot Noir. There’s no doubt, it’s his best vintage to date.

This easy-drinking Pinot Noir is one to stock up on—and with a friendly $19 price tag, that’s an easy task, indeed. Enjoy fun, vivacious flavors of red and black plum, just-ripe Mission fig, savory spice and gently toasted wood.
Freelander comes from the perfect combination of Mike O’Connell, who seems to have the Midas touch in creating value driven brands and all-star California winemaker Larry Levin. Together, they’ve given birth to a number of brands you may have heard of, Pavillon, Grayson Cellars, Hanging Vine and Block Nine.
The Freelander wines are made to be immediately appealing and user friendly and they do just that. I tasted the Pinot blind the other day and I thought it was excellent but then I heard the price. I don’t know what’s a couple steps above excellent, but now it’s that.
The grapes for the wines are selected from several sources throughout California Larry makes the wine in St Helena. With over 30 years of experience making wines in Napa for Quintessa and Turnbull, the big, bold California style is what he excels at making. He takes great pride in producing wines that are driven by their varietal character and have balance, all while providing tremendous value.
