Feudo Montoni is the kind of place that makes you truly long for Sicily. They have a beautiful farm with a villa and gorgeous symmetrical vineyards are home to mostly very old vines (50 years of age and up, but many are pre-phylloxeric and well over 100 years old).
They make phonemenal wines, both white and red, but theirs reds and particularly their Nero d’Avola is something truly special to taste. Ian D’Agata, Vinoous’ Italian expert, called their Nero d’Avola, “simply the country’s best” high but earned praise for the fabulous Montoni family.
The tomatoes they grow on site are as juicy and as wonderful as the wines, and together, they pair perfectly. In my head right now, I’m picturing a fresh pizza pie with the tomato sauce coming from the Montoni’s and their juicy, berried up Nero d’Avola Lagnusa paired with a fresh pie right out of the oven. If that’s not heaven, I don’t know what is.

Bright deep red. Mineral and sweet spices complicate red cherry and botanical herbs on the nose and in the mouth. Long and very lively on the juicy, suave back end. Lovely stuff.

The 2018 Sicilia Nero d’Avola Lagnusa is a well-proportioned expression of this native Sicilian grape that shows equal parts primary intensity with blackberry and cherry contrasted against subtle earthy tones. This is Sicily’s Nero d’Avola in all its naked glory. Pair this wine with veal involtini.

This one comes from one of the most interesting wineries in all of Oregon, home to a crazy one-of-a-kind gravity flow production which has the winemaking team regularly walking up and down three flights of stairs to check on the state of things. Their Pinots are easily some of the best in Oregon, but the Thea’s Selection is the creme de la creme. It’s made from a blend of all seven 100% organic certified estate vineyards, spread across arguably the two best wine AVAs in the state, Dundee Hills and Yamhill-Carlton.

“The striking 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Anonyme is 60% Grenache, 25% Mourvèdre and the rest minor varieties (there’s no Syrah). Aged in a mix of foudres, demi-muids, barriques and concrete tanks, it shows hints of mocha and toast on the nose, but the blackberry and red plum fruit is mouthwatering and fresh, richly concentrated and spicy. Full-bodied, it manages to be ripe, silky and concentrated, while remaining crisp on the lengthy finish. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.”

Since the late 1990’s Penner-Ash has been viewed as one of Oregon’s top wineries making gorgeous wines in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. In the 2021 vintage considered to be one of Oregon’s all-time great years, the 2021 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir that Lynn crafted is gorgeous, a silky tightly woven number that mixes red and black fruits with some sage and baking spices and a savory finish. It’s got some nice weight to it and structure which suggests it’ll age well for the next 10-15 years though it’s already drinking beautifully in its youth.
This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.
