92 Points, Vinous
The 2022 Malbec Barrel Selection originates from Allen in Rio Negro, Patagonia, with 60% aged in 12 months in used French oak barrels. Dark purple in color, the nose features plum and violet tones, along with notes of currant and oak. Dry and supple, the juicy palate lingers long on its floral notes. This is a delicate yet rich red from Patagonia.
Fabre Montmayou Barrel Selection Malbec Patagonia 2022
The 2022 Patagonia cuveé from Hervé Fabre is sourced from one of the most extreme environments in the world. Its ancient vines are rooted in sandy desert high above the Rio Negro, where temperatures can swing 45 degrees in either direction, not an easy place to grow grapes. But it is those extremes that bring out the very best in Malbec – black, opulent fruit yet with aromatic complexity and freshness, this is a big boy that can dance! Drink this wine all year long with any variation of comfort food. If you like big, juicy red wine, this has to be your house red!

MORE INFO
I’ve been a Fabre Montmayou supporter since Day 1, and always have had my pick of the litter with their wines. But last year that changed in a hurry with an Eric Asmiov New York Times feature, a gold medal and a 95-point score for ONE of their wines all in the same month. It was bittersweet. Amazing news for our friends in Argentina, but not so great for us.
Last summer certainly didn’t help. Master of Wine, Tim Atkin bestowed the ultimate honor upon Herve, giving him the “Winemaking Legend” Award during his Argentina Special Report. Nobody is more deserving, sure. But I was sure that our days of unlimited allocations would end with that report and basically, I’ve been right.
I’ve long argued that Herve’s wines are in the all-time top three, if not the very best, in terms of quality-to-price ratio. But in the last few years, the wines have gotten so good that Fabre has made me look far smarter than I am.
