Epoch Estate Paso Robles Rhone Blend 2020

95 Points, Jeb Dunnuck – 94 Points, Vinous

“The 2020 Estate Blend is brilliant, and I’d put it up with the top wines in the vintage. A blend of 46% Syrah, 24% Grenache, and smaller portions of Mourvèdre, Tempranillo, Graciano, Zinfandel, and Carignan, it has a pure, layered bouquet of black and blue fruits, peppery herbs, and spring flowers that carries to a medium to full-bodied, seamless red with beautiful tannins and a great finish. It’s also one of the larger production wines in the lineup as well, so don’t miss it.” -Jeb Dunnuck

Black raspberry, dried flowers and white pepper form the 2020 Estate Blend’s inviting bouquet. This is soft and soothing on the palate. Crisp red and black fruits cascade throughout, underpinned by saline mineral tones that drench the senses. The 2020 finishes incredibly long and staining with fine-grain tannins. Licorice traces slowly fade. In 2020, the estate blend is all Paderewski vineyard fruit

If you haven’t heard of Epoch, they’re quietly becoming a cult-like winery in Paso Robles right under everyone’s nose. I guess with their #3 ranking on Wine Enthusiast’s Wine of the Year list from 2023, they’re not so “anonymous” anymore.

These guys specialize in estate-grown, Rhône-style wines from their vineyards on York Mountain in Paso Robles. This means they primarily work with grapes like Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and other varieties commonly found in France’s Rhône Valley.

They source all their fruit from estate vineyards, controlling the quality from vine to bottle. The results, especially as of late have been staggering. It’s safe to say after these latest rounds of accolades that everyone else in Paso Robles is chasing them.
