93 Points, Decanter – 92 Points (Editors’ Choice), Wine Enthusiast

The beauty of Duckhorn is consistency – vintage after vintage, they deliver Napa Cabernet that works whether you’re opening it tonight or laying it down for years. This 2021 hits that sweet spot with approachable tannins and balanced acidity that make it immediately enjoyable while having the structure to develop. The medium to full-bodied profile shows the restraint that separates serious winemaking from overextracted fruit bombs.

Decanter was all for it in their 93-point review calling it “an excellent dinner table Cabernet from this iconic producer” while Wine Enthusiast gave it an Editors’ Choice designate for a Cab they deemed “a go-to Napa Valley wine”.

Original price was: $480.00.Current price is: $285.00.

93 Points, Decanter
A bright, juicy, and lifted wine with succulent blueberry and black cherry fruits, black currants, clove, graphite, and new wood cedar. Medium to full bodied with supple tannins. A burst of refreshing acidity through the finish makes for an excellent dinner table Cabernet from this iconic producer.

92 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Food friendly, and delicious, this Cabernet Sauvignon combines flavors of dark fruit with savory herbs, fennel, and a sprinkle of sweet spices. Approachable tannins and balanced acidity make this a go-to Napa Valley wine.

As big as it is, the wine is fresh and terrific with Chef Kevin’s Killer Beef Tartar.

Having already set the standard for Merlot in the Napa Valley, the Duckhorns have been on a buying spree that would make even the Perrin brothers blush. When you’re constantly on the hunt for the very top real estate in the valley – let’s face it, all of California – and your last name is Duckhorn – you have your pick of the litter.

Kosta Browne for access to some of the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay produced in the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast. Calera for exclusive access to six of the most coveted blocks of Pinot Noir in the state. Canvasback for Red Mountain Washington Cabernet. The list goes on and on.

But out of all their wines, I think it’s their current Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that is becoming the family’s flagship bottling, even though the ‘Three Palms Merlot’ is a perennial ‘Wine of the Year’ contender with the Wine Spectator. Why?!? Because people simply can’t find enough great, under $100/btl Napa Valley Cabernet anymore (as crazy as that sounds to say). And this one consistently delivers that WOW factor that people seek in their Napa Cabs.

Crafted from both mountain and valley floor grapes, the Duckhorn Napa Cabernet is dense, beautifully rich, and complex with lots of great primary fruit, but also some strong natural acidity and tannic structure that will set this baby up perfectly for the next 20-25 years of aging.

A big wine that needs something big to go with it. I can think of nothing better than a good Beef tartare appertif.
