Cotarella Ferentano Lazio Bianco 2019

94 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 92 Points, James Suckling

“I think it is the only time I taste the little-known Roscetto grape during the course of my work year. The Famiglia Cotarella 2019 Ferentano Cotarella makes good use of this indigenous variety to show the potential found within Italy’s vast genetic patrimony. This expression from 2019 is the best I have tasted so far. The wine shows beautiful clarity and density with a slightly off-gold appearance. With apricot, chopped nut and savory herb, it covers the palate in a steady and complete manner. Compared to the 2018 vintage that I tasted at the same time, this wine from 2019 offers even more depth and richness.” -Monica Larner

This has a complex nose of burnt lemons, gun flint, grilled pineapples, salted caramel and toast. It’s medium-bodied with vibrant acidity. Smoky, taut and intense. Rossetto. Drink now.

Riccardo Cotarella is a titan of Italian winemaking, a globally recognized consulting enologist whose influence has shaped countless wineries across Italy and beyond. He is celebrated for his meticulous attention to detail and a philosophy that marries ripe, concentrated fruit with a modern, polished structure, often helping traditional producers find a new level of quality and consistency.

For decades, his expertise has been sought after by prestigious estates, and he is widely credited with playing a pivotal role in the modernization and elevation of Italian wine on the world stage. However, his true heart and personal passion project lies in his own family winery, Famiglia Cotarella, which he founded with his equally accomplished brother, Renzo.

What makes this project so interesting is that these wines are made from the Roscetto grape, a rare and ancient indigenous variety from the Lazio region of Italy. The Cotarella family is largely credited with reviving this near-extinct grape and showcasing its potential, making the “Ferentano” a benchmark for the variety.
