On Lake Garda, in the Veneto region of Italy, Gianni Piccoli and his three sons make exceptional wine in the charming village of Bardolino. The Piccoli’s natural farming and low yields render highly aromatic and generously fruity wines. The local white wine, Bianco di Custoza, is a fruity, food-friendly wine. It is produced with the same blend of grapes Soave is made from, dominated by the local Garganega and with the addition of the rare Trebbianello.
The Custoza Greoto is a particular exciting, fun white wine. It boasts flavors of caramelized Granny Smith apples, a hint of honey and a stony, dry finish. It is juicy and zesty and the perfect aperitivo. It’s complex enough to pair well with grilled fish, lighter meats, roasted vegetables, or simple pastas.

Crisp, clean and juicy, it puts most Pinot Grigios to shame…
Enjoy its rich aromatics and fruity finish with some delicate fish dishes as well as more substantial pasta and white meat.
We are super lucky to get a small shot at this one which is usually nearly an exclusive for the AltaMarea group. The newly released 2022 Sancerre “Le Mont” from Maison Foucher Lebrun is zipped up and juicy yet offers up complex aromas of gooseberry, citrus, fresh-cut grass, with a tropical zest. On the palate, the wine is very clean and crisp, full-bodied and laser focused, with a good core and a long, tasty finish that offers a dash of minerality and salinity.
Every year, this wine has proven to be a Nicholas Wines staple. The newly released 2022 Frenzy Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is a fabulous value white wine, loaded with green apples, pears and white peaches plus a hint of spice. It’s juicy and fresh, the perfect cocktail hour white. It’s what is referred to as the perfect ‘pool wine’. It’s great paired with just about anything or just enjoyed on its own.
This one is electric, great minerality, great lemon lime and saltiness. It even has a little ageability. I’d drink this over the next few years. This is one of the absolute best expressions from the region (a Cru vineyard designate in 2011) and so perfect with anything out of the sea but in particular the raw bar. Crisp and clean stone fruit with some pear, and a lot of personality. This is a great new discovery wine to check out.
Almondo Roero Arneis Bricco delle Ciliegie Le Rive (Gold Label) is made from the estate’s oldest single plot of vines within the already heralded Bricco Delle Ciliegie (hill of cherries). This is only the fourth vintage of this label but it’s already considered by many to be one of the best white wines in all of Italy. Juicy peaches, pears, and a hint of almonds on the nose. The mouth is dense and fleshy, full of bright fruit, minerality and salinity notes with a touch of spice that’s the highlight of a finish that lingers and lingers in the best way. It’s an absolute treat that I really wish I could snag more than once a year.
