Chateau Tronquoy Saint-Estephe 2022

96 Points, Jeb Dunnuck – 95 Points, James Suckling – 94 Points, Vinous – 94 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 94 Points, The Wine Independent

Think about what your money gets you when you’re combining Montrose resources with this caliber of terroir. Montrose’s flagship 2022 bottling will cost you $300+. Their second wine runs $80-100. Yet Tronquoy, benefiting from the same expertise and using fruit from this prized “terrace no. 3” site remains remarkably affordable.

This 2022 represents what both Jeb Dunnuck and James Suckling called “the finest/greatest vintage ever produced” of this cuvée. The Cabernet dominant blend with 35% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot delivers the perfect marriage of power and finesse. It’s dark in color with aromas of blackcurrant, cedar, and graphite mineral notes. The mouthfeel is definitely full and juicy with structured tannins and layers of dark fruit, tobacco, and earthy undertones. The palate shows excellent concentration with a long, elegant finish marked by hints of leather and spice. Classic Saint-Estèphe character – powerful yet refined, built for aging.

96 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
The 2022 Château Tronquoy is the finest vintage of this cuvée ever produced, offering fabulous aromatics of cassis, graphite, violets, flowers, chocolate, and earthy nuances. Full-bodied and beautifully rich and textured on the palate, with sweet tannins and a seamless, concentrated mouthfeel, it’s already hard to resist, and as I said from barrel, it shows the ripeness of the vintage while staying pure, balanced, and seamless. It’s going to benefit from just 4-6 years in the cellar and drink well for 25+ years.

95 Points, James Suckling
Lots of blackberries, lead pencil, dark earth and blackcurrants. Bright and clear. Full-bodied with lots of fruit yet framed and structured with a deep and intense finish. It goes on for a long time. Greatest Tronquoy ever. A blend of 59% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot and 6% petit verdot.

94 Points, Vinous
The 2022 Tronquoy contains more Cabernet Sauvignon this year due to the low-yielding Merlot, resulting in an impressive Saint-Estèphe. It was an impressive Saint-Estèphe out of barrel. Now, it has a very intense bouquet of blackberry, raspberry coulis, wilted violets and a slight honeyed aroma. This is well defined, miles away from the Tronquoy I tasted a decade ago. The palate is medium-bodied and very balanced, with powdery tannins and a thread of salinity that gives it an estuarine personality. There’s real character to this wine, though I suggest giving it three to five years in bottle before broaching. Excellent.

94 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate
The 2022 Tronquoy has turned out much better than I anticipated, bursting with aromas of dark berries, cassis, cigar box and nicely integrated new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and elegantly muscular palate that’s dense and penetrating. This is well worth seeking out.

Château Tronquoy, located in the heart of the Saint-Estèphe appellation in Bordeaux’s Médoc, is a winery that has been on an absolute tear in the last decade. Its history dates back to the 18th century, but it truly entered a new era of prominence when it was acquired by the Bouygues brothers (who also own the prestigious Château Montrose) in 2006. Since then, they’ve invested significantly in modernizing the facilities and vineyard practices, elevating Tronquoy’s quality and reputation. In 2022, they even decided to rebrand from “Château Tronquoy-Lalande” to simply Château Tronquoy, change the labels and really announce themselves on a new level.

The terroir here is also a huge contributing factor, particularly for the region of Saint-Estèphe. Its 30-hectare vineyard sits on “terrace no. 3,” a renowned geological formation characterized by deep gravel over thick clay, a combination that provides excellent drainage while allowing the clay to retain water for the vines during drier periods. This unique soil structure, coupled with its ideal exposure and proximity to the Gironde estuary (which helps regulate temperatures), contributes to wines of remarkable freshness and complexity.
