98 Points, James Suckling
Blackberries, plums, currants, tobacco and violets on the nose. Bitter chocolate and mocha, too. It’s refined and focused, with a medium to full body and firm, tightly-knit tannins. Very long, laser-focused and polished. Very classy. Best of the trilogy.

97 Points, Decanter
Heady and expressive on the nose, seductive tones of ripe fruit and perfumed flowers. Gorgeous intensity on the palate, rich, round and ripe – gently chewy – but cool and refreshing too. This has a dynamic undercurrent with tannins that are fine but firm giving a slightly narrow frame. It’s a bit more serious than some, brooding, but clearly well made with definition. There’s a confidence here, vibrant and detailed fruit with an excellent lingering impression of the terroir in the slightly salty, chalky, graphite touch. Layered and well built with supreme classicism. A top buy. I’d like to own this one!

97 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
This estate has been on a roll, and their 2020 Château Brane-Cantenac is another brilliant wine that readers will love. Largely in the mold of the 2019, it has a deep purple hue as well as an incredible bouquet of blackcurrants, black cherries, freshly sharpened pencils, tobacco, and flowers. This medium to full-bodied, richly textured, concentrated, yet remarkably elegant 2020 has the vintage’s fresher, focused, elegant profile but still brings plenty of flesh and opulence. Beautifully done, it’s going to evolve for a solid 30 years in cold cellars and offer incredible pleasure all its life.

97 Points, Wine Enthusiast
From what is one of Margaux’s leading estates, this wine is structured and initially firm. Then it reveals luscious black fruits and succulent acidity that gives the wine a fine perfumed character, dense texture and the promise of some serious aging.

Château Brane-Cantenac is on a tear that just about no other Chateau in Bordeaux can claim. Their run over the past two decades has been nothing short of legendary with some of the very best bottles in Margaux and beyond, with some of the biggest scores to boot.

The winery is an iconic one with a rich history, having been given a Second Growth classification in the prestigious 1855 Bordeaux Classification. But the winery had slumped until Henri Luton took over in 1992. Since then, there aren’t many places run better.

Under the stewardship of Henri Lurton, Château Brane-Cantenac has seen a remarkable renaissance, with significant investments in both vineyard management and winemaking practices. The estate’s commitment to sustainability and precision viticulture, combined with modern winemaking techniques, has resulted in wines of exceptional finesse, complexity, and aging potential.

In recent years, the quality of Château Brane-Cantenac’s wines has continued to ascend, earning accolades from critics and wine enthusiasts alike. This upward trajectory can be attributed to several key factors: a commitment to sustainable viticulture, investment in state-of-the-art winemaking technology, and an unwavering focus on expressing the true character of their exceptional terroir.

The 2020 vintage seems like the culmination of some of this hard work. The scores are insane – four different reviews of 97 points or more for a wine that I’m telling you now is absolutely out of this world. It outpointed every other winery in Margaux besides Chateaux Margaux themselves, matching even Chateau Palmer in James Suckling’s 2020 report.
