96 Points, James Suckling – 95 Points, Tim Atkin – 94+ Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate

“From parcels in the heart of the Valtuille valley, this was only bottled two months ago at the point of tasting but was already very expressive. It offers elegance and great depth and complexity. The palate is fleshy with a firm grip, showcasing intense red cherry and raspberry fruit accented by subtle licorice. A wine with lots of character that captures the essence of the zone. Drink 2025-2033.”

“Perfumed on the nose, with dried geraniums, rose petals and herbal nuances. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, showing an ethereal character with delicate fruit. Subtle and refined, with a graceful finish. This comes from five parcels planted in the village of Valtuille. It’s classified as Vino de Villa, the designation for a village wine. Fermented with about 30% whole clusters. Drink now.”

“The village red 2023 Valtuille Vino de Villa comes from sandy soils on closer plots. This year, it’s 85% Mencía, 10% Alicante Bouschet and 5% other white and red varieties like Bastardo, Sousón or Estaladiña. It fermented with some full clusters in 1,000-liter vessels and matured in 500-liter barrels. It’s juicy, round, harmonious and fruit-driven, with freshness and elegance.”

César Márquez Pérez is a rising-star winemaker whose family lineage in Spain’s Bierzo region dates all the way back to 1752. He crafts killer micro-cuvées of old-vine Mencía and Godello, capturing the unique terroir of specific tiny plots (parajes) defined by their distinct soils and elevations. Ultimately, he is mapping Bierzo like the Grand Crus of Burgundy.

His family has been making wine in Valtuille de Abajo for centuries, and he’s backed by serious tradition. His focus is on parajes—distinct, tiny plots with old-vine bush vines. Depending on whether the roots hit decomposed granite, clay, sand, or stone, the juice takes on vastly different energy and flavor profiles.
