The famous Bolgheri castle at the estate has origins dating back near 1200. It’s an incredibly rich historical place that now is home to over 130 hectares, 50 of which are covered by vineyards with the rest made up of some 6,000 olive plants, sown grounds and woods.
It’s hard to argue that any winery is better situated in Tuscany. Tucked between the two most famous wineries in Italy of Ornellaia and Sassacaia, the grapes grown here are mainly Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot from the best DOC vineyards surrounding the castle. The Bolgheri castle, still owned by the same family, is situated between the world-famous Ornellaia and Sassicaia (The 2015 Sassicaia was Wine Spectator’s #1 wine of the year in 2018) wineries.
Their wines are every bit as classy as their two neighbors, just released without much of the fanfare and most of the big bucks that surround those wines. As you can tell by it’s big scores each year, including this, the 96-point 2015 vintage, it’s clear these wines deserve Italian collector’s full attention.

96 Points, Wine Spectator
Very tightly wound, with a dense bed of tannins providing support for the black currant, black cherry, wild herb, mineral and earth flavors. Ripe yet lively, showing fine intensity on the fruit-, mineral- and tar-filled aftertaste. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Best from 2022 through 2040.

WS #4 2019 Wine of the Year, 96 Points, Wine Spectator
2016 was an incredibly special year in Napa Valley. It was essentially the 5th straight vintage of near perfect-conditions and a lot of the big boys produced some of their biggest, most elegant Cabernets to date. Groth’s was still one of the standouts in any group, a deeply concentrated, weighty Cab with sappy, juicy fruit and a carefully intertwined tannic structure. Absolutely gorgeous.

Far Niente’s beloved Napa Valley Cabernet comes from a who’s who of the best vineyard sites throughout Napa Valley. It’s a seamless Cabernet blend sourced from Oakville, Stag’s Leap, Diamond Mountain, St. Helena, Calistoga, Oak Knoll and the winery’s estate fruit in Yountville. The 2021 vintage is a particular high note – it’s a must-have for Big Red, Napa and Cabernet lovers.
With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.
91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
