Bulleit Barrel Strength Bourbon Whiskey

Categories ,

The Bulleit Barrel Strength hits you with a wonderful warmth right from the start, a testament to its proof without being overwhelming. On the nose, it’s a rich medley of dark caramel and a surprising hint of orange peel, almost like a spiced holiday candy. Dig a little deeper, and you’ll find classic vanilla bean mingling with a distinct baking spice aroma – think cinnamon and a touch of nutmeg.

The first sip is surprisingly smooth, with a generous, almost chewy texture that coats the palate. Those initial sweet notes deepen, revealing maple syrup and a lovely underpinning of toasted oak. There’s a delightful rye spice that builds gently, offering a peppery kick without being aggressive, leading into a lingering finish that marries the fading sweetness with a satisfying, dry warmth and a final whisper of cocoa powder. It’s a bold yet balanced pour that truly showcases the depth of Bulleit’s high-rye character.

Augustus Bulleit, a Kentucky tavern keeper, developed a high-rye bourbon recipe in the 1830s. His unique blend distinguished his product and lifted the entire industry to relevancy, but he disappeared in 1860, and the recipe was lost. The Bulleit brand was revived in 1987 by Thomas E. Bulleit, Jr., Augustus’s great-great-grandson, who recreated the original high-rye mash bill.

While Bulleit is always known for their consistency and quality, there haven’t been a ton of new or singular offerings. This new bottling is overdue in my mind, but delivered right on time. For the first time ever, we locked into the Barrel Strength Bourbon from Bulleit. Don’t miss it while it’s in.
