Austin Hope ‘Austin’ Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles (2022 Vintage)

Categories , ,

Austin Hope hasn’t just been Paso Robles’ hottest commodity, but arguably one of the country’s brightest stars with his two recent Top 10 appearances on Wine Enthusiast’s annual”Top 100 Wines of the Year” list. But as Paso prices start to catch up to their Napa Valley foes, Hope’s greatest trick with his ‘Austin’ Cabernet Sauvignon bottling is how he manages to pack so much punch in a bottle that can be had today at a bargain.

But here’s where it gets even more crazy: part of the reason that Austin can keep prices down is that he makes ‘Austin’ a non-vintage Cabernet Sauvignon where he could blend juice from other vintages in if he runs into any issues. It’s a great way to keep the price down and still deliver a killer end result. But with this release, Austin bit the bullet and made this entirely with 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon juice  – a product of a near perfect vintage in Paso Robles. When you take that into consideration… this is just a silly good deal.

Original price was: $26.00.Current price is: $19.99.

The man at the center of it all, learned everything he knows from the Caymus Family, and now owns Treana and his namesake winery right next to one another off Live Oak Road. Collectively, the two wineries are responsible for a very large portion of the 92+ Cabernet Sauvignon scores that come from this budding wine region.

In fact, Austin Hope hasn’t just been Paso Robles’ hottest commodity, but arguably one of the country’s brightest rising stars, with him making a Top 10 debut in Wine Enthusiast’s annual Top 100 Wines of the Year list a few years back.

His ‘Austin’ Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from all over the Paso Robles AVA with the key factor being that almost all of the fruit comes from 1200 feet elevation or higher (a huge advantage of their competition). In fact, some of the Cabernet Sauvignon fruit here comes from the Paso Robles Highlands district (1500-1700 ft) located at the far-eastern edge of the AVA on high-mesa plains with a high concentration of ancient seabed soils. If you’re not Austin Hope, you’re not getting that contract!

His latest release is something special. While the Austin Cabernet is typically non-vintage, the 2022 fruit was so extraordinary – so concentrated and juicy – that he couldn’t resist making it a pure vintage wine even if you’re paying a ‘Non-Vintage’ price. That’s when I swooped.
