The man at the center of it all, learned everything he knows from the Caymus Family, and now owns Treana and his namesake winery right next to one another off Live Oak Road. Collectively, the two wineries are responsible for a very large portion of the 92+ Cabernet Sauvignon scores that come from this budding wine region.
In fact, Austin Hope hasn’t just been Paso Robles’ hottest commodity, but arguably one of the country’s brightest rising stars, with him making a Top 10 debut in Wine Enthusiast’s annual Top 100 Wines of the Year list a few years back.
His ‘Austin’ Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from all over the Paso Robles AVA with the key factor being that almost all of the fruit comes from 1200 feet elevation or higher (a huge advantage of their competition). In fact, some of the Cabernet Sauvignon fruit here comes from the Paso Robles Highlands district (1500-1700 ft) located at the far-eastern edge of the AVA on high-mesa plains with a high concentration of ancient seabed soils. If you’re not Austin Hope, you’re not getting that contract!
His latest release is something special. While the Austin Cabernet is typically non-vintage, the 2022 fruit was so extraordinary – so concentrated and juicy – that he couldn’t resist making it a pure vintage wine even if you’re paying a ‘Non-Vintage’ price. That’s when I swooped.
