In 1970 Piero Antinori made a new wine ‘Tignanello’ becoming the second ‘Super Tuscan’ of its time along with Sassicaia. It broke Chianti Classico DOC’s strict rules about blending Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with Sangiovese so for years, it was labeled as simply a ‘table wine’ although everybody saw right through that. In fact, ‘The Tig’ would help birth the Super Tuscan movement which for the last half century, has accounted for some of Italy’s finest Red wines ever made. A movement was born.
Nowadays, it seems like everybody is making a Super Tuscan – desperate to repeat the success and grandeur of The Tig, Sassicaia and Ornellaia… good luck.
The Antinori Family’s Tenuta Tignanello Estate vineyard is one of Chianti’s crown jewels. The sprawling, picturesque vineyard of some 140 acres is rich with rocky, calcareous limestone-rich soils and a southwestern exposure at 1150-1325 feet above sea level, giving the family everything they need to make some of the world’s greatest wines.

A sleek, elegant red, with fine purity to the aromas of cherry, black currant, iron, olive and tobacco. Shows new oak on the palate, lending both spice notes and structure offset by ample fruit and texture. Balanced, complex finish. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2026 thru 2047.

Produced from vines of the Tenuta Tignanello estate, the 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva offers a flashier and riper style with notes of Marasca cherry liqueur, polished leather, toasted vanilla bean, and licorice candy. It is full bodied without being heavy and is rich with plum, cedar, sage, and potting soil. Raised in a combination of French and Hungarian oak barrels for approximately one year, the oak imprint is certainly felt but is very well managed, and the wine wears it well. Drink 2025-2040.
Once again dialing up fruit from 1000-1500ft in elevation in the Dundee Hills, Chad’s 2021 is juicy, laser focused and roaring out of the gates. Chad tells me that similar wines (very similar wines) off this vineyard are raising their prices up to $55/bottle from $45 this year due to 2020’s lost year. But where most people are raising prices to recoup last year’s losses, the CHAD Pinot Noir price is somehow lower. A true gift from our favorite winemaker.

“Paolo di Marchi’s leaving present to Tuscany is this delightful 2019 Isole e Olena Cepparello. Cepparello is a blend of Sangiovese from different vineyards, selected by Di Marchi on the basis of “the best exposure, elevation, soil, genetics and age. I feel this adds complexity.” The first vintage was in 1980 when 100% Sangiovese was not permitted under the Chianti Classico rules. Those rules have since changed but the wine remains an IGT Toscana. It has a supremely enticing nose with cream and exotic spice, reminding me of Arabian spice markets. With the 2019 there is an added precision to the aromas, less heavy oak, and no greenness on the palate. It is concentrated with a rich velvety texture but without any heaviness and with a gentle unforced quality. The tannins are fine and very well integrated, in fact finer and better integrated than even the excellent 2016 vintage. It is of course very young now but it’s almost too delicious not to drink! Supremely graceful, it just gets better and better.” – Lisa Perotti-Brown
The next great Big Red in the long line from the Wagner family of Caymus fame. Like the previous Quilt offerings, this represents Joe Wagner’s pick of the litter of available vineyard sources that puts his inimitable blending abilities into play. In a vintage as easy and as heralded as 2021, the only difficulty the Wagners had was finding things they didn’t like. So explosive and juicy on the palate with a lush mouthfeel and silky smooth tannins. A winner for Napa and Big Red fans alike.

Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.
