Antinori Marchese Chianti Classico Riserva 2020

Categories , , ,

In 1970 Piero Antinori made a new wine ‘Tignanello’ becoming the second ‘Super Tuscan’ of its time along with Sassicaia. It broke Chianti Classico DOC’s strict rules about blending Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with Sangiovese so for years, it was labeled as simply a ‘table wine’ although everybody saw right through that. In fact, ‘The Tig’ would help birth the Super Tuscan movement which for the last half century, has accounted for some of Italy’s finest Red wines ever made. A movement was born.

Nowadays, it seems like everybody is making a Super Tuscan – desperate to repeat the success and grandeur of The Tig, Sassicaia and Ornellaia… good luck.

The Antinori Family’s Tenuta Tignanello Estate vineyard is one of Chianti’s crown jewels. The sprawling, picturesque vineyard of some 140 acres is rich with rocky, calcareous limestone-rich soils and a southwestern exposure at 1150-1325 feet above sea level, giving the family everything they need to make some of the world’s greatest wines.

Original price was: $50.00.Current price is: $40.00.

95 Points, Wine Spectator
A sleek, elegant red, with fine purity to the aromas of cherry, black currant, iron, olive and tobacco. Shows new oak on the palate, lending both spice notes and structure offset by ample fruit and texture. Balanced, complex finish. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2026 thru 2047.

Produced from vines of the Tenuta Tignanello estate, the 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva offers a flashier and riper style with notes of Marasca cherry liqueur, polished leather, toasted vanilla bean, and licorice candy. It is full bodied without being heavy and is rich with plum, cedar, sage, and potting soil. Raised in a combination of French and Hungarian oak barrels for approximately one year, the oak imprint is certainly felt but is very well managed, and the wine wears it well. Drink 2025-2040.

In a great 2020 vintage in Chianti, the Antinori Marchese Riserva is absolutely electric. It was a hot year, so it’s expressive right out the gates with red berry, creme de cassis and cherry vanilla aromas. There’s just so much elegance and grace to the wine, you can taste the pedigree here. There is not a single hard edge to this wine. At the price and with the score from Wine Spectator, this very well might be a Top 20 or Top 10 wine of the year this year… at the very least!
