Enticed by foreign (American) buyers who prefer bigger wines with thicker skins that mirror the style of California Cabs, winemakers began to rip out their Dolcetto plantings in the 1990’s in favor of the more expensive, easier to market Barolo and Barberescos. It came down to money, not quality and quietly the wine world mourned.
But Anna Maria Abbona’s Dolcettos should make you rethink that strategy all together– consistently making some of the best and most fun wines to drink while it’s young. Her Langhe Dolcetto is the product of extremely low-yielding but highly concentrated juice that comes from the younger vines of her Estate in Langhe, where high elevation brings out the best of the Dolcetto — the most fragrant and some would argue best compliment to a good pizza pie with some meat on it!
