The legendary winemaker is now firmly in his 70’s (pushing 80?!?) but shows absolutely no signs of slowing down as he continues to rack up ‘Winemaker of the Year’ and ‘Lifetime Achievement’ awards all still within the past few years.
I was blown away when our winemaking friend told me he had a new project – like really blown away. When does this guy rest? What does he even have left to prove?!?
But of course when winemaking is in your blood and you still feel good, you continue to push the boundaries and try to make truly special wines. That’s what Herve Fabre is doing with his new winery, Alta Yari.
Alta Yari was born out of the desire to make the very best Crus from vineyards in his hometown. The goal is to make Alti Yari the greatest wine estate in Argentina and amazingly (though not surprising) he has them on pace.
They’ve made wines at Alta Yari for all of two years and already they’ve been treated to a litany of 91-95 point scores with some of the most beautiful Argentine Red expressions that I’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting. Fabre called the Alta Yari estate ‘one of the best he’s found in his 40 years of winemaking in Argentina’. That is not something that I or you should take lightly. That’s not usually the way Herve talks.

91 Points, James Suckling
Aromas of mulberries, violets, blackberries, blackcurrants and tobacco leaves. Fresh, fruity and bright with a medium to full body and creamy tannins. Focused and well-balanced. Drink or hold.
91 Points, Descorchados
This wine manages to display ripe fruit without fatiguing or numbing the tongue. On the other hand—and thanks to a good network of tannins and acidity that provides tension and alleviates the sweetness of the fruit—it’s nervy and agile with enough body and flavors of red fruits and herbs to accompany charcuterie.

The 50 hectare estate of Maurice Robert is the jewel of this beautiful growing region, located east of Bordeaux. Robert is first and foremost a viticulturist, tending his vines like gardens. The Bordeaux Rouge 2016, a barrel-fermented, vibrant blend Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with juicy cassis fruit and just the right touch of savory spice. It is a perfect choice for roasted poultry, grilled burgers or steaks or any Alpine cheese.
92 Points, James Suckling
Since the late 1990’s Penner-Ash has been viewed as one of Oregon’s top wineries making gorgeous wines in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. In the 2021 vintage considered to be one of Oregon’s all-time great years, the 2021 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir that Lynn crafted is gorgeous, a silky tightly woven number that mixes red and black fruits with some sage and baking spices and a savory finish. It’s got some nice weight to it and structure which suggests it’ll age well for the next 10-15 years though it’s already drinking beautifully in its youth.
95 Points (Gold Medal), 2022 Decanter Wine Awards
The expert reviews on this incredible new release from Herve Fabre are insane. 90 points and a ‘Best Buy’ designate from Wine Enthusiast, 90 more from Suckling. Ditto from Vinous who called this “young, firm, with well-worked tannins and good structure”. But in a crowded see of nearly 20,000 wines at the Decanter Wine Awards in 2022 – this stole the show. The only 95-point, Gold medal Cabernet that you can get for under $20/bottle, its second straight year in the most rarified air.
92 Pts, James Suckling – 90 Pts, Vinous
This offer is really an easy one. Two of the greatest wine pioneers from two different hemispheres (Baron Eric Rothschild from ‘Chateau Lafite Rothschild’ and Nicolas Catena from ‘Catena’) join forces to make a delicious, Bordeaux style Malbec, crafted nearly 4600 feet above sea level and offered for a fantastic price. This beauty that Vinous called, “remarkably intense” is a case-buy all the way every single vintage released. Only 30 btls to sell though… sorry in advance!
