93 Points, James Suckling
This is a lighter style of Super Tuscan, with seductive cherry, licorice, blackberries and dried herbs. It’s way-too-easy to drink and understandably gets 90+ points every vintage but in the ideal, hot 2017 vintage, the ‘Tre’ got its highest score since the 2011 vintage. James Suckling who gave the wine a 93, called it ‘full-bodied, structured and rich with fine acidity and freshness”. This is a knockout Tuesday nighter.
97 Points, James Suckling – 94 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate
There is so much to like in this flagship Chianti from Castello do Bossi, who the Wine Advocate calls, “one of the headline estates from the Castelnuovo Berardenga commune of Chianti Classico”. The big scores and the price-tag are super juicy– but so is the wine, which offers a medley of black cherry, blackberry and lavender notes. It’s also so wonderfully structured with a strong acidic backbone, fine tannins and a vibrancy that extends through the finish.

A very special Italian Collectors item. 2015 was an enormous gift for any winery with a Tuscan address. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rated the vintage a shocking 97 points. Ian D’Agata – arguably the foremost expert on Italian wine has gushed, calling the 2015s “the best in recent memory.” But maybe Mr. James Suckling said it most succinctly, exclaiming “The 2015 vintage is a historical year for Brunello di Montalcino that nobody should miss.”
2019 will be the next classic in a line of great Montalcino vintages, with the power and fruit of 2007 or 15 with the structure and aromatic complexity of 2010 or 16. Cerbaia’s Rosso is expressive and elegant with the lifted aromatic profile only possible when sourced from high elevation vineyards rooted in mineral soil. In the mouth, it shows juicy, bright red berries with savory elements of sage, sweet tobacco and anise. An almost perfect vintage makes this Rosso hard to resist right away but it has the bones to mature gracefully in a proper cellar for 5-7 years.
Winemaker, Joschi Goldschimdt, has produced a killer Chianti in ’19, filled with aromas and flavors of sweet berries, rose petals, cedar, and tobacco, wrapped tightly with a firm structure and fine finish. Amazing tension guarantees this to be a no-brainer at any dinner table, delicious with just about anything.

Made by Cristina Geminani, who Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate called, “one of the best in all of Italy”. With both brighter acids and darker fruit than Chianti Classico, the Ceregio is brilliant ruby color, with racy, black cherry fruit flavors, and probably the longest finish I’ve ever tasted at any where near this price point.
Situated right next door to the vineyard of the original Super Tuscan Tignanello Vineyard (costs a cool $125 per bottle these days), Poggio al Sole is the hidden gem of Tuscany. If you want to hit a home run with your next pizza night, I mean, really go all the way, you have to serve the latest release of Poggio al Sole’s fabulous Super-Tuscan, Trittico. The newly released 2019 vintage is in so far this wine is showing beautifully. It definitely bodes well for what is to come as it’s already pretty expressive and energetic. This is a great Sangiovese and Cabernet blend for the summer, with anything off the grill or with pizza. Don’t miss it.

If you’re looking for arguably the best expression of Rufina each year, you can’t do any better than Selvapiana. Located right in the heart of Chianti Rufina in Tuscany, the producer has long been considered one of the very best. Wine Spectator declared a few years back, “Selvapiana would give stiff competition to first-class red wines from just about anywhere else in the world. It also shows that Chianti Classico does not have a monopoly on the quality of Chianti as a whole.”
Soon to be Rated
Two years ago, Wine Spectator gave this wine the highest rating a Chianti Classico has ever received. Last year, three reviewers gave the wine three scores of 93+. This year in a fantastic year in Chianti, the sky is once again the limit for one of the best wineries anywhere. The soon to be reviewed 2018 Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva is a flat-out winning wine. It’s big and juicy, with layers of dark fruit, bramble and an extremely long finish. This is one of the great CC Riservas to collect and/or enjoy in its bombastic youth.
