97 Points, Luca Gardoni – 95 Points, James Suckling

CastelGiocondo represents the crown jewel of Frescobaldi’s Montalcino holdings. It sits in the southwest corner of Montalcino at 300 meters elevation – treasured land in Tuscany. Their 2019 Brunello has what Luca Gardoni calls a “spicy elegance.” His 97-point review highlights refined black cherry aromas with touches of juniper and cinnamon, leading to remarkable density and drinkability. And he wasn’t alone in his praise of the wine.

James Suckling awarded 95 points, noting “black cherries, black bark, blackberries and lavender” with “juicy and polished tannins.” Decanter was one of three experts who came in at 93 points, praising the wine’s “suede-like texture” and calling it, “Well-made with everything effortlessly in place.” This is Brunello operating at the highest level and you can make a strong argument that it’s not even close to its prime yet.

97 Points, Luca Gardoni
“South-west quadrant of the denomination, a Brunello of spicy and balsamic elegance. Refined nose, black cherry, touches of juniper, closes on cinnamon sensations. Density and drinkability on the palate, with iodized tannins and a return of black cherry hints, with citrusy touches.”

95 Points, James Suckling
Black cherries, black bark, blackberries and lavender. Medium- to full-bodied with juicy and polished tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Needs four or five years to open and come together. Best after 2027.

Frescobaldi’s story is one that is very closely connected with the history of Tuscany. Sitting just outside of Florence at the high point of the medieval old-town, the Frescobaldis  were previous patrons of major works in Florence, such as Santa Trinita Bridge and the Basilica of Santo Spirito.

For the last 700 years, they’ve been growing wine in Tuscany. Slowly and carefully they have purchased estates which have given them access to all sorts of terroir throughout some of the most prime locations in all of Tuscany.

CastelGiocondo represents the crown jewel of their entire Montalcino holdings. It’s perfectly located in the southwest corner of the Montalcino AVA at 300 meters above sea level in elevation, sacred land from which the estate produces some of the most memorable Sangiovese examples of anyone in Tuscany.
