Enrico Serafino has began making traditional-method sparkling wines at his home Roero estate in 1878. No one has done more to carry an AVA than Enrico and his work in the Alta Lango. He was a paramount piece in setting up the Alta Langa DOC in 2002 as well as having the wines shine on an international stage.
The big thing here is consistency. These guys don’t try to do too much – they make a few wines, and they’re always excellent. They produce three Alta Langa DOCG wines, with their ZERO Alta Langa Metodo Classico being awarded the Best Italian Sparkling Wine of the Year by the prestigious Gambero Rosso Guide in 2014.

The 2019 Brut Oudeis, from Alta Langa, is remarkably pretty, with a delicate blend of peaches and young mango complicated by hints of incense and spice. This displays round, soothing textures and juicy acidity with a core of tart orchard fruits that add a lovely tension toward the close. It finishes with medium length, leaving a twang of sour citrus and a steely minerality that adds a tactile touch. The 2019 is beautifully crafted and displays incredible balance. Well done. The Oudeis is a blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay

Enrico Serafino began making traditional-method sparkling wines at his Roero estate in 1878, and the winery was instrumental in the creation of the Alta Langa DOC in 2002. Oudeis, a blend of pinot noir with 15 percent of chardonnay, offers an elegant balance of tangy citrus and green apple flavors in a lush, pearly texture, with a refreshing saline finish.

“Aromas of bark, dark cherries and flowers, too. It’s medium- to full-bodied with purity of fruit that runs the length of the wine. It goes on for minutes. Very fine tannins. From organically grown grapes. Needs three or four years to completely come together, but gorgeous. Drink after 2026.” -James Suckling
This is a new release and it’s quite the show stopper. If you’ve never had the Abbonna Dolcetto Dogliani Sori di But, you need to. Drawn off the highest vineyard in Dogliani where Dolcetto is the king grape. This one has tremendous energy out of the bottle. Dark violet in color, with wonderful aromas of black cherry, tea leaves and sage, fermented in steel vats to allow these ‘grand cru’ ancient plantings to shine through unencumbered. So aromatic and food friendly. A must try! Get it before these great vineyards are gone forever!

“The 2000 Dom Perignon is a gorgeous, seductive wine that floats on the palate with remarkable grace. Toasty aromas meld into freshly cut flowers, apricots and pears, with sweet notes of mint and licorice that linger on the long finish. This perfumed, inviting Dom Perignon is elegance personified, and in this vintage the wine fully merits its lofty reputation.”

This one has always been my go-to for entertaining – I just hand everyone a glass upon arrival and people are always thrilled. The new batch of 2020 Barmes Cremant has just landed – and it’s so dang good. So much freshness and energy, with a beautiful nose of green apple and Anjou pear with tinges of honey, white nuts and white flowers. The fruit is near perfect, richly concentrated with a creamy texture. The finish is endless, with the tiniest of bubbles, with a zippy acidity that makes it perfect with seafood.
