Kentucky is certainly the top of the heap when it comes to making bourbon. Don’t sell Alabama short though. They take their Whiskey pretty seriously too. It is after all their official state drink. You know what New Jersey’s is? Yep, cranberry juice. Man are we boring.
The king of the hill in Alabama is Clyde May’s . He put Alabama style whiskey on the map. Alabama Style is good (adding apples into the mash bill) but for me Clyde’s straight bourbon is what I’m interested in. To say Clyde’s has an interesting history is an understatement. It says it right on the bottle . Available since 1946, legal since 2001. Hmmmm. After a little stint in jail for bootlegging Clyde was famously quoted ” it’s better to break the law than to cut corners”. It has become the motto of the distillery. This is my kind of place. I think Hazzard County was set in Georgia but there is no doubt in my mind that Bo & Luke were inspired by Clyde.
For years I’ve been trying to get my own barrel of Clyde May’s. They always have just offered me their Alabama Whiskey. Don’t get me wrong, that is really good, but I’m a purist and like high proof straight bourbon. Thankfully, my persistence has finally paid off. I was able to select a 5-year-old bourbon last year and it has finally arrived.
Single barrels of Clyde May’s are super limited. This mash bill is a high corn 75%, 21% Rye & 4% Barley.
She was born on 4-18-16 & bottled on 7-27-21.
A nice 102 Proof but you’d never know it!

The secret to Philippe’s tightly wound, complex Pinot Noir is a combo of ancient vines, natural farming techniques, and low yields. The wines are built to age, with incredible tension and length. And the secret to me securing his other-wordly 2017 old-vine Gevry-Chambertin can be chalked up to a great relationship and over a decade supporting superior Burgundian winemaking. The wine is scary good. The nose is wild, filled with spiced dark raspberries, red flowers, and baking spices. The palate is elegant and racy, with a dynamic tension that runs right through its minute-long finish. This is a high-toned, wound-up Pinot, that is starting to hit its prime and is really turning out to be a ‘must-have’ for true Burgundy lovers.
The third release of three batches from Booker’s Bourbon 2023 Collection is Booker’s Batch 2023-03 ‘Might Fine Batch.’ These mini-releases have become extremely popular, and for good reason. “The vanilla and brown sugar sweet notes come through very well from the white oak barrels this bourbon aged in for over seven years. The taste is great and full bodied; when I added a splash of water, it opened up some great flavors, with a finish that gives a lovely “Kentucky Hug. My Dad would say that this is a Mighty Fine batch of Booker’s.” -Fred Noe
This is a very rare single barrel Bourbon Whiskey to make its way to Jersey. Maple syrup, butterscotch, caramel & brown sugar with a palate of caramel apple, roasted almond, ripe banana and graham crackers. This one has a full mouthfeel with a nice creamy middle. The finish here lingers with just the right amount of burn. This was born on 2/3/2017 and bottled at 102 Proof. This is a great bottle of Whiskey.
Rich and creamy notes of toasted oak, vanilla, caramel, and fresh baked Bundt cake immediately flood the sense’s as soon as you pop this one open. Bottled at 100-Proof, you get a little bit of heat on the front palate followed by rich oak, leather and freshly baked bread. As it starts to open, you get some sweeter, creamy vanilla notes that cream in as well as campfire s’mores and a dash of pepper. The finish is long, and a bit spicy which leaves a memorable aftertaste and leaves you wanting more.
