Volpi Timorasso Colli Tortonesi Derthona 2023

92 Points, James Suckling – 92 Points, Wine Enthusiast

Not only is this a great Italian white, but it is also one that can be aged. As it picks up time in the bottle, it almost starts to pick up similar characteristics as Riesling. Wine Enthusiast gave this beautiful expression 92 points and wrote that the wine “Starts subtle but builds like a symphony… The finale brings everything together in perfect harmony, leaving you ready for an encore.” James Suckling matched with 92 points of his own, calling it a “layered wine with complex aromas.”

92 Points, James Suckling
A layered wine with complex aromas of lime peel, ferns, wet wool, chalky minerality and a touch of pine. Medium-bodied with good concentration, a supple palate, sharp acidity and vibrant, savory depth. Integrated and balanced.

92 Points, Wine Enthusiast
This wine starts off subtle but builds like a symphony. The first notes are quiet: white flowers and unripe peach. Then the volume increases: ripe pear, citrus oils, wet stone. The finale brings everything together in perfect harmony, leaving you ready for an encore.

Last year, we discovered “White Chianti” which has taken Nicholas Wines by storm. Now, I’m bringing you Timorasso, the delicious age-worthy white affectionately known as “White Barolo,” and I’m bringing you the perfect introduction to the category.

The 2023 Volpi Derthona Timorasso comes from the southeastern hills of Piedmont, where this ancient grape experienced an incredible near-extinction story. Because Timorasso is such a finicky grape that requires patience and grows in small yields, most decided to rip out the vines in favor of Barbera and Cortese. By 1987, only 1.2 acres of Timorasso existed in the world before its remarkable renaissance. But thanks to some defiant winemakers like Marco Volpi who continued to churn out incredible and complex whites, it rose like a phoenix from the ashes. Now, the popularity has skyrocketed, with over 100 winemakers working with this amazing grape. As it should be!
