The nose is a well-stocked kitchen, with coffee always ready, a decadent spice drawer and expensive balsamic, and the aromas of cherries and soil wafting in from the garden. On the palate, notes of vanilla and candied orange underscore the cherries’ juicy sweetness, while the savory notes linger as undertones, before lithe tannins and hot acid usher in a long finish.
Grab a few bottles– one or two to enjoy now and one or two to lay down and check back on in 5-10 years time.
Val di Suga is one of my favorite Brunello producers and one of the region’s strictest. They release their wines crazy late after having spent 24 months in Slavonian oak barrels, 12 months in concrete tanks, and at least 12 months in bottle before their release. Heck, by the time they actually hit the market, they’ve already aged several years and are well on their way to hitting their stride.
For this vintage, Val di Suga rebranded their labels to reflect an updated approach in vineyard and cellar, including a less oxidative style that sees less time in wood and more time in bottle. The classic Brunello remains a blend of their three diverse vineyard sites within Montalcino – armed with vineyards in three of the top spots in the region, they blend elements of each into their flagship, continuously making some of the most interesting Sangiovese around.
