Some of the ‘summer wines’ that we can’t ever seem to get enough of are the crisp, mineral-laced Verdicchios from Marche. Nicholas Wines buyers aren’t dumb—there are few things that can compete with a crisp, refreshing Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi on a warm summer day with a table full of fresh seafood in front of you. But of course, not all Verdicchio are made the same, and I try to only bring you the ones you really need.
For the past few years, Umani Ronchi has proven themselves to be one of, if not our customer’s favorite producer from Northern Italy. The incredible values that these guys seem to deliver year in and year out are completely unmatched. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate agrees. Last year when they tasted the CaSal Verdicchio from Umani Ronchi, they came to the same conclusion, writing that “You don’t get better value than this.” Hey, you guys are late to the party!
The latest release from Umani Ronchi, the 2021 CaSal di Serra Verdicchio, was only recently released, but it already comes with a bit of critical fanfare. Suckling gave it a 91-point score and called it, “a clean, focused white.” That is true, but only tells part of the story. This one hits with energetic, clean notes of stone fruit, jasmine, lemon drops, and citrus fruit.

91 Points, James Suckling
A clean, focused white with aromas of green apples, lemons, white grapefruits and wet stones. Medium-bodied with bright acidity and plenty of tension. From organically grown grapes. Drink now or hold.
