Wine writer and longtime wine competition director Rich Hill called this newest release “a classic Napa wine that again shows Trefethen’s mastery with Cabernet.” That much is clear. For the past three years(!), the Trefethen Cabernet took home ‘Best in Class’ honors at the Decanter Wine Awards.
Of course, with that kind of success, and with rising costs, their price has gone up slightly. Even so, anybody else who has seen four consecutive vintages of 96+ point scores would have their Napa Cab into the $$$. Not so at Trefethen, where it’s still under $50/bottle today and we have a special deal.
They’re a husband-and-wife operation—Janet & John Trefethen have been at it in Oak Knoll since 1973 when they restored the original Trefethen winery that was established in 1886. This isn’t some fluke winery winning ‘Best in Show’ awards. Trefethen is iconic in the Napa Valley as one of the largest estate wineries as well as the only wooden gravity-flow winery in the entire region.
The wines that come from this unique wooden gravity-flow winery are truly special. They’re full-bodied, fresh, and incredibly expressive, yet perfectly integrated and balanced, no doubt the result of a winemaking facility unlike any other and a team of winemakers that know exactly how to handle each vintage.

96 Points Double Gold, Sommelier’s Choice Awards 2023
Powerful and youthful Napa Valley Cabernet. Black fruit notes with blackberries and black cherries. Potential for further ageing. Well integrated tannins. Well balanced wine, can be paired with rib eye or even steak.
94 Points, Decanter – 93 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 93 Points, James Suckling
Massolino’s inaugural effort is superb. Typical of the very finest Nebbiolo, floral elements dominate the nose, here violets & rose with a touch of dark candy sweetness. The tannins are obvious but supple and refined, making this wine a much more approachable in its youth than you might expect. The 94 point Decanter review is worth reading below. Like most other Barbarescos from top vineyard sites, I expect these wines to reach firmly into the three figures in no time.
Chad’s 2020 McKinley Springs Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is drop dead gorgeous and actually makes zero sense at all at this price. Dark purple to the rim with aromas of black fruits, violets, creme de cassis and a hint of spice. On the palate, full-bodied, round and juicy with elegance and the gorgeous, pure fruit– red and black currants, blackberries and a touch of sweet tobacco. It’s a delicious bottle of Cab.
An amazing, once in a blue moon shot at acquiring all three of the single-vineyard Pinot Noirs from the family behind Caymus at a buyers-only price of $120 (27% OFF). Each single-vineyard in the Wagner portfolio is very different– each with unique soil, climate, region and even Pinot Noir clone. Each is from the 2021 vintage and is new and yet to be scored. Not to worry though, these always rack up big scores and Las Alturas was just #11 wine of the Year from Wine Enthusiast in addition to a 96-pt score. The 2021 single-vineyards are sure to rack up the big scores they always do– but we don’t have the luxury of waiting. Now’s the time for an awesome collector’s opportunity. Pinot and Caymus lovers, rejoice!
96+ Points, Jeb Dunnuck
“Another brilliant wine from this team is the 2019 Hermitage, which spent 26 months in 50% new French oak and 50% in once-used barrels. Its dense purple color is followed by a massive array of ripe blackberry and cassis fruits interwoven with notes of scorched earth, subtle smoke, beef blood, and crushed rock. It’s big, full-bodied, concentrated, and opulent, yet it has ultra-fine tannins and impeccable balance as well. It’s going to take a decade to shed its baby fat (it offers ample pleasure today) but should have 20-30 years of overall longevity.”
