Travaglini Gattinara Riserva DOCG 2019

#10 Wine of the Year, James Suckling (2024)

98 Points, James Suckling – 94 Points, Vinous

This 2019 Riserva captures everything that makes great Gattinara legendary – that perfect balance of power and elegance that only comes from Nebbiolo grown on these volcanic soils. Suckling mentions “dried cherries, red currants, earth, licorice, dried flowers, meat and tar” with “refreshing, brilliant acidity.” It’s the kind of wine that reminds you why Piedmont produces some of the world’s best and most age-worthy reds. This is one of the finest examples ever released from this great estate.

98 Points, James Suckling
Restrained violets, cherry pits, rhubarb and licorice. It is almost austere on the nose, like the great wines of the past, but then on the palate the tannins flow ripe and velvety, dusty enough so you can recognize nebbiolo. Full-bodied and crisp, with tight yet integrated acidity that keeps tension up at the end. Austere in the finish yet precise and long, with whiffs of mint. A wine intended for the long haul. Best in five to 10 years.

94 Points, Vinous
The 2019 Gattinara Riserva is a super-classic wine. It offers a fine mix of soaring aromatics, deep fruit and classically-leaning structure. Readers should plan on giving this a few years in bottle. Dried red cherry fruit, orange peel, mint and rose petal add to the wine’s super-classic profile.

When you talk about Gattinara, you’re talking about Travaglini. Period. They’ve been the leading producer in this tiny corner of Piedmont since the 1920s, now run by the fourth and fifth generations of the same obsessive family. You know their bottles immediately – that crooked, distinctive shape they patented specifically to trap sediment so you never have to decant.
