Tolaini Al Passo Toscana 2021

94 Points, Vinous

Pierluigi Tolaini spent 45 years in Canada dreaming of returning to Tuscany to make world-class wine. When he finally came back in 1998, he didn’t mess around – he bought prime Chianti Classico land, the world’s top consultant, Michel Rolland, and built a state-of-the-art winery from scratch.

This is a true Super Tuscan – a mixture of the Italian grape, Sangiovese with French grapes Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a delicious blend showcasing a softer, more round and finesse side of Super Tuscans. Antonio Galloni called it “very beautiful and expressive” with “dried cherry, tobacco, cedar, licorice and incense” that lends “notable aromatic nuance.”

Original price was: $32.00.Current price is: $24.00.

The 2021 Al Passo is a very beautiful and expressive wine. Dried cherry, tobacco, cedar, licorice and incense lend notable aromatic nuance. This Sangiovese/Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon blend has a ton to offer. Bright acids pull it all together in style.

Tolaini’s approach combines old-world terroir with new-world precision. High-density planting up to 11,500 vines per hectare, individual drip irrigation, two green harvests, and optical sorting ensure only perfect fruit makes it to fermentation. The estate’s location in Castelnuovo Berardenga, Chianti Classico’s southernmost commune, provides the mineral backbone that elevates this blend beyond typical Super Tuscan territory.
