Thomas Fogarty Pinot Noir Windy Hill Vineyard 2017

“Readers should do whatever they can to taste these wines.” -Antonio Galloni

94 Points (Editors’ Choice), Wine Enthusiast – 92 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate

This is high-altitude Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir at its absolute finest. We’re talking single-vineyard, single-block fruit from what was a fantastic and often overlooked 2017 vintage in California. It’s an incredible cold weather site at over 2000 feet elevation that helps create some incredibly racy and vibrant Pinot Noir. This is soil-driven, restrained, savory Pinot with layers of complexity, energy, and focus. It’s absolutely delicious. No doubt food-friendly, but I think it deserves a big glass and some time by itself. It’s fantastic. It’s the kind of Burgundian Pinot that makes you rethink what California can do when they don’t chase such big expressions and focus more on precision and balance.

“Smoked cherry, turned earth, mushroom, singed pine and a hint of maple show on the nose of this bottling from a vineyard 2,000 feet high. The palate begins with a tart raspberry and pomegranate flavor, then picks up floral tones of lavender and rose petal, with hints of game and rosemary arising by the finish.”

“The 2017 Pinot Noir Windy Hill Vineyard has a pale to medium ruby color and scents of dried black cherries, loamy earth, crushed blueberries and Earl Grey tea leaves with notes of dried herbs, peppercorn and laurel plus an undercurrent of floral perfume. The palate is light to medium-bodied with a firm, pleasantly chalky texture, lifted red fruits and a long, very juicy finish.”

“These are, without question, the most impressive wines I have tasted from Fogarty. Longtime winemaker Nathan Kandler and proprietor Tommy Fogarty hit it out of the park. The Chardonnays are deep, tense and loaded with energy. Pretty much the same is true of the Pinot Noirs, which offer unreal depth, complexity and dynamic energy to match. Winemaking is minimalist. Spontaneous fermentations, modest use of new oak and some stem influence in the Pinots are the norm. Aging in wood is around 16 months, on the long side for California and ideal for these wines. Readers should do whatever they can to taste these wines.” -Antonio Galloni, Vinous
