The Withers Grenache El Dorado 2019

All the grapes here are grown in granite and volcanic caldera soils of the Sierra Foothills and aged for two years in 100% neutral French oak. It’s almost all Grenache, but the key here is that David gets a little depth from added Mourvedre, and a little spice and zest from a splash of Syrah. This is definitely a Southern Rhône- inspired blend, a region known for focusing on the more ethereal, mineral-driven side of this lovely varietal.

This is a beauty that offers delicate, flinty, and persistent aromas of crunchy red and citrus fruits that coat the palate with texture and perfect balance. The total production is only a few dozen cases, but I managed to steal a couple away from their dedicated wine club. This is the perfect, juicy treat for the BBQ season ahead.

Here’s why this wine is such a runaway success: David Low is the winemaker behind the scenes. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s also the founding winemaker at Anthill Farms after spending a long time at Williams Selyem—two of the most sought-after Pinot Noir producers in California. This is the same guy regularly crafting $100+ bottles, and taking that expertise and putting it behind his brother’s passion project, with fruit he gets to select himself from some of the best spots throughout California.

For the Grenache, David sources this fruit from the Sierra foothills in a location that’s well protected with lots of neighboring trees, but still sees plenty of sun. The Grenache here is beautiful – juicy and delicious, with a little added depth coming from Mourvèdre and a splash of Syrah that adds a hint of spice.
