Rouge:
93 Points, Wine Enthusiast
A blend of 45% Syrah, 30% Grenache, 23% Mourvèdre and 2% Counoise, starting with aromas of fennel and sage alongside cranberry fruit. The palate settles into a smoother display of wild berry and cherry, as chaparral spice pairs to the leathery texture.

92 Points, Vinous
The 2023 Patelin de Tablas is incredibly fresh. From the glass, the 2023 cascades with a zesty blend of savory herbs, olives, earth tones and crushed stones. This is silky smooth with a burst of brisk acidity complementing sour cherry-berry fruits and hints of tart citrus. The finish is long-lasting, with gentle tannins that gradually fade, leaving behind lingering hints of violet pastilles and lavender. This balances ripe fruit with structure and an energetic persona to give a truly spellbinding impression.

92 Points, Decanter
The Patelin de Tablas serves as a portrait of the greater Paso Robles AVA year after year. It shows the region’s ability, even if other producers may not follow suit, to produce a ripe, redolent wine at under 14% abv—aromatics of smoky rose petals, spicy chicory root and a blend of peppercorns. The palate is densely fruited while remaining light on its feet. Dark blackberries, fig and plum fruits are lifted by savoury dry herbs, crushed stone minerality and a lift of five spices.

Blanc:
93 Points, James Suckling
The nose shows layers of citrus, orange blossoms, jasmine and biscuits. The palate is medium-bodied with focused acidity and notes of cantaloupe, nectarines and red apples. Generous and giving, with a mineral core. A blend of 50% grenache blanc, 23% viognier, 10% roussanne, 8% marsanne, 8% vermentino, 1% bourboulenc. Drink or hold.

By now, I’m sure you know the story, but if not, here’s a brief refresher: The wine world was forever changed in 1987 when the Perrin family, the family behind the legendary Chateau de Beaucastel, struck a partnership with the Haas family of the U.S. importer Vineyard Brands to create ‘Tablas Creek’. The two families had known each other for years, and both firmly believed that Paso Robles was far more than just the Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant land that it was – perhaps even the perfect place to plant Rhone varietals.

Here’s why Tablas Creek matters: They didn’t just make wine—they changed American winemaking forever. Rather than keeping their elite Beaucastel clones for themselves, they sold them to hundreds of other wineries across the country. Most of the high-quality Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Roussanne planted in California today can be traced back to Tablas Creek. They elevated the entire “Rhône Ranger” movement.
