Susana Balbo Signature White Blend Brioso 2024

95 Points, Vinous – 94 Points, Decanter – 94 Points, Tim Atkin, MW

This is a meticulous blend of 40% Torrontés, 30% Sauvignon Blanc, and 30% Semillon sourced from high-altitude vineyards in the Uco Valley. The combination of intense sunlight and dramatic temperature swings at these elevations ensures the grapes achieve complex flavor ripeness while retaining vibrant, crisp acidity needed for structure and aging.

Vinous called it “delicate and fragrant” with “aromas of white flowers, mint and subtle citrus such as pink grapefruit” where “the palate combines a crisp texture with creamy tension, delivering a delicious, dynamic white.” Decanter found “bright citrus aromas with nuances of flowers, honey, spices and white fruits” with a “rounded and soft texture.”

95 Points, Vinous
The 2024 White Blend Brioso is composed of 40% Torrontes, 30% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon from Paraje Altamira in the Uco Valley. Delicate and fragrant, it displays aromas of white flowers, mint and subtle citrus such as pink grapefruit. The palate combines a crisp texture with creamy tension, delivering a delicious, dynamic white.

94 Points, Tim Atkin, MW
Consistently among the best white blends in Argentina, this remains a pioneering beautifully judged cuvee of Torrontes and 30% each of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Chalky, stony and intense, it’s a wine that carries its 40% new wood slightly, showing layers of citrus, kiwi fruit, beeswax and tangerine and a top note of honeysuckle. Effortlessly complex.

94 Points, Decanter
Bright citrus aromas with nuances of flowers, honey, spices and white fruits. Rounded and soft texture on the palate.

Susana Balbo is Argentina’s first female enologist – a pioneer who graduated in 1981 and spent decades consulting for major wineries globally before starting her own label in 1999. She’s the winemaker who transformed Torrontés from a rustic variety into a complex, internationally respected wine and elevated Argentinian whites onto the world stage. That’s how she earned the nickname “Queen of Torontes,” a name she carries around proudly.

But despite not being a straight Torrontes, her Brioso White Blend might be her finest achievement – the ultimate expression of her white winemaking philosophy and her mastery of blending high-altitude French varieties in Argentina.

The 2024 Brioso just earned 95 points from Vinous, 94 from both Decanter and Tim Atkin MW, and 93 from James Suckling. Tim Atkin calls it “effortlessly complex” – “consistently among the best white blends in Argentina” that’s “chalky, stony and intense” with “layers of citrus, kiwi fruit, beeswax and tangerine.” Parker’s Wine Advocate says “Susana Balbo’s wines wonderfully reflect their creator’s personality: confident, lively, elegant and singular.”
