We’ve had this one locked up for a while so last month’s review doesn’t really have anything to do with us offering it today. But Galloni pretty much hit the nail on the head. There is no domestic Syrah in this price point that comes close to Pete’s Estate Syrah.
I generally compare Pete’s Estate Syrah with some of the high flying $80+ bottles but this vintage it may be more appropriate to liken it to a solid Cote Rotie (maybe it’s partially the pinch of Estate Viognier Pete adds).
Pete’s Syrahs are always excellent; this one is his best ever and as close as you can get to perfect Syrah. The flavors just seem to explode in little pockets – ever changing with each sip; perhaps making it too easy to drink, but resist it. Give it a little time in the glass and you’ll be rewarded.
The 2019 Estate Syrah is outstanding with a mouthful of fresh cherries and red berries, a hint of herbs and a slight white peppery finish. For my money, this is the best bottle of Syrah for the price that we have in America, a beautiful expression of the harmony between Pete’s delicate winemaking and the cool Santa Barbara climate.

94 Points- Antonio Galloni, Vinous
The 2019 Syrah Estate Grown is superb. Bright, rich and juicy, the 2019 captures all the qualities that make Ballard Canyon wines so compelling. Blue/purplish fruit, scorched earth, licorice, chocolate and cured meats all saturate the palate. Some of the other Syrahs are more potent, but the Estate often has the best balance.
These are the most impressive wines I have tasted from Peter Stolpman. Over the years, Stolpman and his family have invested incessantly in their Ballard Canyon ranch, so their success is very much earned and deserved. Within the typical range of wines, my favorite bottling remains the Estate, which I feel best encapsulates both the personality of this site and Ballard Canyon more broadly.
For a Syrah that could put $50 bottles to shame, the Stolpman Syrah can be amazingly be had today at nearly half the price.

Pair this beauty with grilled meats, vegetables, wild game and beef stew.
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”
The 50 hectare estate of Maurice Robert is the jewel of this beautiful growing region, located east of Bordeaux. Robert is first and foremost a viticulturist, tending his vines like gardens. The Bordeaux Rouge 2016, a barrel-fermented, vibrant blend Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with juicy cassis fruit and just the right touch of savory spice. It is a perfect choice for roasted poultry, grilled burgers or steaks or any Alpine cheese.
WS #4 2019 Wine of the Year, 96 Points, Wine Spectator
2016 was an incredibly special year in Napa Valley. It was essentially the 5th straight vintage of near perfect-conditions and a lot of the big boys produced some of their biggest, most elegant Cabernets to date. Groth’s was still one of the standouts in any group, a deeply concentrated, weighty Cab with sappy, juicy fruit and a carefully intertwined tannic structure. Absolutely gorgeous.
