Starmont Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc 2024

93 Points, Decanter – 93 Points, James Suckling

Not surprised to see this one attached to big scores again This is a California Sauvignon Blanc made right. The aromatics are simply off the charts, leaping from the glass with bright, vibrant notes of kiwi and grapefruit that New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc lovers crave, but with a distinctly California soul.

I think the combination of balance and energy is what really sold me here – there’s all that juicy tropical fruit you want, but with a vibrant natural acidity and a subtle mineral backbone that keeps everything fresh and focused. This is exactly the kind of white I want on my table as we head into summer entertaining season – versatile enough for everything from seafood to spicy dishes to simple porch sipping.

93 Points, Decanter
“It is incredibly bright and focused, with fabulous salinity underscoring ripe orchard and subtle tropical fruit, ranging from apple and pear to white peach and apricot. A hint of reduction on the nose brings a flinty minerality which is quite lovely.”

93 Points, James Suckling
“Lifted aromas of fresh pineapples, yellow apples, flint and cut grass. The palate is medium-bodied with a generous texture, bright acidity and fresh, citric drive. A refined and pure example of Californian Sauvignon Blanc.”

Starmont has deep roots in Napa Valley and in St. Helena in particular. It was a brand that originally was launched by Merryvale as a second label in the late 1980’s, a fairly revolutionary concept at the time. The only “problem” was that the brand quickly developed such a strong reputation that it was spun off as its own entity about 20 years ago. They’re known for their exceptional quality and consistency and with the same winemaker at the helm for decades, there’s no surprise as to why.

What I’m sure most people don’t realize is that the property is now owned and managed by none other than Albert Bichot, the legendary Burgundy producer who made this strategic American investment to expand their portfolio of exceptional wines. That has only helped Starmont take things to the next level as far as sustainable practices and French influence in the vineyard.
