The Alexander Valley was more of a backwater back in the early 1970s when Joe Martin decided to quit his day job of supplying grapes to some of the biggest names in Napa in order to start his own 100-acre orchard in the Valley.
At the time, it seemed like an enormous gamble until Robert Parker, Jr. fell in love with the wines of Alexander Valley and more specifically, St. Francis, raining down successive 92 to 96 point scores – scores rarely seen outside of Napa at the time.
Combine that with Joe Martin’s hospitality focus (St. Francis is a must-visit) and all the sudden, Joe’s vision came to fruition in the form of wine tasting mecca. It’s truly a world-class winery destination that is consistently ranked near the top of annual lists and twice recognized by OpenTable reviewers as the ‘Best food and wine pairing in the world’.
One of those wines that are heavenly to pair with is their signature Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a bright, entry-level expression that can be had at a great price, but it delivers far beyond its modest price tag. It’s got everything you’re looking for. Beautiful melon and tropical notes on the nose with a green apple core that’s backed by crisp acidity and a stone-fruit mineral component.

Gold Medal (Best in Show), 2023 Mundus Vini International Tasting
The area has also been isolated from the rest of Spain for generations, which has kept the wine prices far lower than wines of this quality would be anywhere else in the world. That’s why, despite having the Torres family name on the bottle and the consistent huge press (including the Gold Medal & Best in Show at the 2023 Mundus Vini International Wine Awards in Germany), these wines can still be scooped up for under $20/bottle. It’s like the Sancerre pricing of yesteryear.
This is a super elegant Meursault from the family-run estate located in the village of Monthelie, between Volnay and Meursault in the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. It leads with nutty aromas of brioche, fresh butter and delicate citrus and is extremely well structured, long and stylish with great purity of fruit.
Glistening pale yellow-green to the rim, infused with mouth-watering aromas of ripe apple, pear and quince, and crushed almonds with honey and rich creamy middle and a fantastic rush of acidity and minerality that are present throughout. A calling card of Bonhomme’s Vire-Clesse, if you closed your eyes and took a sip, it would have you convinced you were drinking Meursault at least a 3x price tag.
Every year, Pierre Sparr’s Alsacian Riesling is one of the top scoring wines in the under $20 category. There’s a consistency there and consumers know they can count on a Riesling that is aromatic, fruity, elegant, clean and vibrant. Pierre Sparr wines are extremely food-friendly especially in the widely praised 2021 vintage where quality rose to an all-time high. It’s a bone-dry beauty with layers of citrus fruits, framed by wet stone and mineral character that adds dimension.
