The Alexander Valley was more of a backwater back in the early 1970s when Joe Martin decided to quit his day job of supplying grapes to some of the biggest names in Napa in order to start his own 100-acre orchard in the Valley.
It seemed like a gamble until Robert Parker, Jr. fell in love with the wines of Alexander Valley and more specifically, St. Francis, raining down successive 92 to 96 point scores – scores rarely seen outside of Napa at the time.
Combine that with Joe Martin’s hospitality focus (St. Francis is a must-visit) and all the sudden, Joe’s vision came to fruition in the form of wine tasting mecca— a world-renowned tasting room known for its unrivaled food and wine pairings.
When I visited a few years back, the pairing I most remember was the Zinfandel and baby back ribs pairing. Ooooowwweeee. I like a saucy rack of ribs as much as the next guy – and the combination of the zesty ribs with a super ripe, jammy and intricate old-vine Zinfandel was a memorable pairing that hit all the right chords.

Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
90 Points, James Suckling
Damien has crafted a delicious Médoc, full of character with dense black currant and cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco and wonderful complexity. It’s silky complexion is what pushes it over the edge (and, of course, the price!) It doesn’t hurt that it comes from a 95-point Left Bank vintage that the Wine Advocate declared, “outstanding.”
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.
