Silverado Vineyards is perfectly situated on the northwestern hills of the beloved Stag’s Leap District. Just like the world famous SLD, Silverado Vineyards has made an international name for themselves over the last four decades.
Ron Miller and his wife Diane Disney along with her mother Lillian Disney (yes, that one) established Silverado in 1981 and as you can imagine, they spared no expense in buying vineyards up and down the Silverado Trail and across Napa’s top AVAs, with six total vineyards in their portfolio.
With the perfect vineyard layout at their disposal, it’s not surprising this winery has become the juggernaut it has today. There’s that and there’s also the people.
Winemaker Jon Emmerich has been there over 30 years – an uber rare occurrence in this day and age – and has been there every step of the way as to see the place blossom into what it has become. After all these years, he knows every single block like the back of his hand, which is how the ‘Block Blend’ Cabernet Sauvignon came to be. It’s sorta a “dealer’s choice” if you will of Silverado’s Cabernets with the winemaker and his team crafting a blend from the very best vineyard blocks from Silverado’s estate Cabernet vineyards.
In 2018, Emmerich and company cooked up a particularly special blend. The Cab incorporated blocks M to T in Mt. George Vineyard (first planted in Napa in the 19th century) along with Silverado Vineyard Blocks A to T (home vineyard to the namesake winery) and lastly Block S from the legendary Oakville Station Vineyard (first planted in 1883).

Ripe blackcurrants, cocoa powder, toasted walnuts and dried flowers on the nose. It’s medium-bodied with firm, ultra fine tannins. Structured and fresh. Lovely balance of fruit and chocolate. Try from 2022.

Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
Chad’s 2020 McKinley Springs Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is drop dead gorgeous and actually makes zero sense at all at this price. Dark purple to the rim with aromas of black fruits, violets, creme de cassis and a hint of spice. On the palate, full-bodied, round and juicy with elegance and the gorgeous, pure fruit– red and black currants, blackberries and a touch of sweet tobacco. It’s a delicious bottle of Cab.

San Giorgio Ugolforte is the sister winery of Poggio di Sotto. Their 2017 presents a dark core of red and black berry fruit layered with earth, leather, smoke, and herbs. It’s a complex and elegant expression, that presents a full mouthfeel that is firm in tannin structure. The refreshing acidity frames a graceful finish. Just a classic Brunello di Montalcino.
98 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate
“Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard opens with provocative ferrous, crushed rocks and tar notes over a core of crème de cassis, redcurrant jelly and raspberry leaves with a hint of wild fungi. The medium to full-bodied palate is taut with tension and jam-packed with pure black and red fruits, supported by firm, grainy tannins, finishing with uplifting mineral sparks. This energetic beauty needs some time. Give it a good 4-5 years in bottle and drink it over the next 25 years+.”
