A rich, juicy red with cherry and dried-berry aromas and flavors. Some pepper and spices. It’s medium-bodied with soft tannins and a delicious finish. Drink or hold.
Serego Alighieri Possessioni Rosso 2018
Serego Alighieri is one of the most prestigious and historic Venetian estates with roots that date back to one of the most famous poets of all time. The great Dante Alighieri (referred to simply as Dante) grew up in a wealthy family which allowed him to write poetry that we still read today including one of the most influential literary works of all time, The Divine Comedy.
The Alighieri winery was started by Dante’s son, Pietro in 1353 and has been in production now for 670 years. In 1549, the Alighieri family had only female heirs, and one of them married into an imperial family, the Seregos. Ever since that time, it’s been the Serego Alighieri winery, and their reputation in Valpolicella is rivaled. If you ever find yourself visiting, there’s no better place to go, the oldest winery still in operation in the region and one of the very best still to this day.
Part of the secrets to their success is their collection of vineyards. Perfectly situated on rolling green hills from 750-1250 ft above sea level on top of rich red soil with limestone and clay deposits. Wedged between Lake Garda and the Adige River, the conditions are always very mild and therefore extremely favorable. This advantage has remained for centuries, where more than 21 descendants of the poet have lived and worked.

92 Points, James Suckling
For me, the the unquestioned top value in Serego Alighieri’s entire portfolio (which of course consists of Valpolicella and Amarone, the hometown favorites). But the Possessioni is like a SuperTuscan but made in a more suitable, cooler climate and with the addition of Corvina, this one is both full-bodied, yet ultra sleek and silky with vibrant red fruits, and waves of licorice intertwined. It’s plump and juicy on the palate with cherries and cocoa and a remarkably smooth, lengthy finish that begs for another sip.
