Schiopetto is a super-highly regarded winery located in the Collio region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, tucked away in northeastern Italy. They are particularly celebrated for their high-quality, elegant white wines, which have played a big time role in establishing the entire region’s reputation for excellence.
The winery was founded by Mario Schiopetto in the 1960s. He’s considered a pioneer in modern Friulian winemaking, introducing innovative techniques while respecting tradition. While many winemakers were chasing French varietals to plant in their vineyards, Mario championed Friulian grape varietals, arguing that they were better suited for the soil.
Although they do make an otherworldly Sauvignon, I think their Pinot Grigio bottling in the Pompiere lineup is their ace up the sleeve. It’s an incredible wine that sets them apart from anyone making PG.
