San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucere Riserva 2012

Categories , ,

In an ideal location in Northern Montalcino near Biondi Santi’s Il Greppo and La Serena, sits San Filippo Estate. Founded in 1972, the estate has become a whole other animal, since Roberto Giannelli took over more than 15 years ago and transferred the winery into one of the best in the region.

Said Robert Parker Jr. about the transformation, “San Filippo is home to some of the best boutique Brunello today. This wasn’t always the case, and I am thrilled to have witnessed the growth of this promising estate throughout the years. The quality of the product has made quantum leaps since I first tasted the wines more than a decade ago.”

Wine Spectator recognized the 2012 Le Lucere Riserva as one of the “cream of the crop” bottles of the 2012, a testament to famed Italian winemaker, Paolo Caciorgna who Giannelli convinced to come over from Altesino and making wine for Sting. There’s so much to love about this wine– it really is a collector’s dream. It’s enormous but so well structured and composed. It’s drinking great but is still young. This one has another 20-30 years of life easily.

Original price was: $180.00.Current price is: $135.00.

98 Points, James Suckling

Wow. This is really fantastic with outstanding depth of fruit and ripe and silky tannins. So much blueberry and cedar character with hints of flowers. Full body, fine tannins and a fresh and clean finish. Lovely balance to this wine. Better after 2022 but already exciting to taste.

96 Points, Wine Spectator

A broad, mouthfilling style, boasting black cherry, plum, leather, chocolate and spice aromas and flavors. A riper style, yet not soft, with more support from dense tannins than acidity. Finishes with a dusty aftertaste of tobacco and graphite. Best from 2021 through 2034.

This is one of those bottles of wine that you wish you could just check in on every so often and see what’s going on with it. It’s a tremendous wine and easily one of the standouts of Montalcino in the super hot 2012 vintage. Even with a few years of age to it already, this one is still incredibly youthful but still shows wonderful precision that keeps this big boy completely dialed in. I love the weight and structure that this Sangiovese is showing right now.  An absolute beauty to have in the cellar. This one is a must for serious Italian wine collectors.
