San Felice Perolla Maremma Rosso 2019

San Felice has long been the standard bearer for the modern style of Sangiovese. Starting over 40 years ago, experimental vineyards were set up to test various theories to optimize Sangiovese flavor. Winery facilities were absolutely cutting edge.

The San Felice vineyards are situated amongst the gently rolling hills of the Castelnuovo Berardenga area of Chianti Classico. The vines are planted in two different soil types: calcareous clay and a combination of sand and lime.

The terroir of Campogiovanni, including its sandy, mineral-rich argillous soil, allows Sangiovese vines to grow slowly and steadily, therefore producing unusually complete and balanced grapes. In addition to indigenous varietals like Toscana’s classic Sangiovese, San Felice has plantings of international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Like Enzo, winemaker Leonardo Bellacini has spent much of his career working with Sangiovese carries on the legacy of tradition and research and experimentation.

Very soft and delicious with sour cherries, light chocolate and some cedar. Medium-bodied with medium, round tannins and a delicious finish. Drink now.

This funny little Tuscan blend consists of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo, an Italian grape named for cherries that is seen in a little of Chianti blends. It is fermented in stainless steel, undergoing a brief maceration before being bottled in the spring following harvest. This is one of those youthful wines that’s made to drink right away.  It’s packed with energy, a mix of fruity and earthy aromas and delicious flavors.
