Robert Mondavi To Kalon Vineyard Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

98 Points, Tasting Panel – 95 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate

The 2014 vintage forms part of what many consider the holy trinity of modern Napa Cabernet, following the exceptional 2012 and 2013 harvests. James Suckling, after tasting over 500 Big Reds from the vintage, declared it “a vintage not to miss” and called it “one of the best of the past two decades” in Napa. Just imagine what Mondavi put together for their flagship bottling…

This particular Reserve, sourced from the most coveted blocks within To Kalon, showcases the concentrated cassis, blackberry, and graphite minerality that defines great Oakville Cabernet. The Tasting Panel’s 98-point review captures its essence: “From its aromas of dark cherry and vanilla spice to its deeply expressive notes of graphite, leather, plum, and earth, the velvet drapes across the palate from start to finish.” A decade of proper cellaring has integrated these elements into seamless complexity.

From the most coveted blocks within To Kalon–the treasured vineyard of Robert Mondavi that was the location of his winery home since 1966–this is the fourth vintage of the To Kalon–designated Reserve. Like a classic rock ‘n’ roll tune from that era, this wine ranks among the most revered and will continue to be memorable for decades. From its aromas of dark cherry and vanilla spice to its deeply-expressive notes of graphite, leather, plum, and earth, the velvet drapes across the palate from start to finish.

95 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve To Kalon is a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Deep ruby/purple-colored, notes of sweet creme de cassis, blackberry, charcoal and toast are present in the subtle but intense aromatics. The wine is full-bodied and classically crafted, building incrementally on the palate and displaying full-bodied richness, sweet tannin, and a potential to age for 25-30 + years. This is a beauty.

“It goes without saying that probably no one did more for the image, the quality and the prestige of Napa Valley than Robert Mondavi. He was “the” ambassador for the region, and while he certainly lived to see its rise to glory and fame, I doubt that even he envisioned the remarkable wines that are now emanating in prolific quantities from this Shangri-La for growing grapes.” -Robert Parker, Jr.

Robert Mondavi is an undisputed titan of American wine, and his story is the very foundation of modern Napa Valley. In 1966, after a bitter family dispute led him to leave the Charles Krug Winery, he broke ground on a new winery with a singular, revolutionary vision: to produce California wines that could stand shoulder to shoulder with the finest wines of Europe. At a time when many in America viewed wine as a simple, sweet table beverage, Mondavi championed a European-style of winemaking and a philosophy that wine was an essential part of the “good life”—a civilized and cultural experience. He was a tireless promoter of not only his own brand but of the entire Napa Valley, selflessly sharing his innovative techniques and encouraging his neighbors to raise their own standards. By introducing practices like cold fermentation and aging in small French oak barrels, he became the ultimate ambassador for the region, ultimately transforming Napa from a quiet agricultural community into a global destination for fine wine.

At the heart of Robert Mondavi’s legacy is his most cherished possession: a significant portion of the hallowed To Kalon Vineyard. He famously said of the site, “It was a vineyard with a distinguished history and a magical nature.” To Kalon, which translates from the Greek as “the highest beauty” or “the highest good,” is widely considered the most celebrated vineyard in the Napa Valley. Its prime Oakville location, with its well-draining gravel and clay soils, provides the perfect conditions for growing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. It was this vineyard that served as Mondavi’s canvas, a place where he could prove his grand ambition and create wines that were a true expression of California terroir. He was one of the first to recognize its potential to produce wines of immense power, elegance, and incredible longevity.

The ultimate expression of this vision is the Robert Mondavi Winery Reserve To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon, the crown jewel of the estate. This wine is not just a bottle of Cabernet; it is a profound testament to Mondavi’s legacy and the exceptional quality of the To Kalon vineyard. It is produced from the most prized blocks of the vineyard, carefully hand-selected to represent the pinnacle of the vintage. The resulting wine is a masterclass in balance and complexity, celebrated by critics and collectors alike.
