Wine Spectator #6 Wine of the Year (Top 100 Wines, 2022)

Robert Mondavi is one of the most famous names in the entire wine world and has been for decades. The winery was founded in 1966 by winemaking pioneer Robert Mondavi, whose vision was to create Napa Valley wines that could stand in the company of the world’s finest.

It was the first major winery built in Napa Valley in the three decades following the repeal of Prohibition, Robert Mondavi Winery created the foundation for the modern-day California wine industry.

Today, Robert Mondavi Winery continues to pursue the fullest expression of Napa Valley terroir in wines that are also varietally authentic. Mondavi chose to situate his estate next to To Kalon Vineyard, one of the most coveted wine growing parcels in the world, known for producing award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon.

Using 100% fruit from Oakville with 97% coming from To Kalon Vineyard in the 2019 vintage, their ‘Oakville Estates’ bottling takes class to a whole other level. This one is absolutely stunning. No joke, from the first sip, you can see exactly why  this thing was #6 Wine of the Year from Wine Spectator last year out of nearly 20,000 wines! It’s deep and powerful number with flavors of blackberry, blueberries, anise, and dark chocolate all in perfect harmony and accompanied by sweet oak spices, nutmeg, and clove. The wine is firmly structured by velvety, age-worthy tannins and there is absolutely no hard edges. It’s like drinking silk. I’d think it has another 15-25 years easily but it’s already drinking so stinkin’ well. She’s a beauty and the best price you’re going to find on To Kalon Vineyard for Cabernet by a mile!

Original price was: $90.00.Current price is: $79.00.

94 Points, Wine Spectator (#6 Wine of the Year, 2022 Top 100)

Throws off some pretty gorgeous aromas of violet, anise and sweet bay leaf, with a core of ripe, streamlined boysenberry and blackberry pâte de fruit flavors following closely. The finish has a racy graphite edge, while the fruit and aromas just spill through. Approachable now, too. Drink now.

What was previously released as the Oakville Cabernet, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estates Tier comes all from To Kalon and was fermented in oak tanks and aged in 96% new French oak. The blend is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and the rest Malbec. Ripe black fruits, smoked herbs, graphite, and even a touch of minerality define the bouquet, and it’s full-bodied, concentrated, and beautifully textured on the palate. Drink it over the coming two decades.

93 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Almost entirely from To Kalon (there’s 3% from the former Franciscan property), the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon The Estates Oakville is composed of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% each Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec and 1% Merlot. It’s a deeper, earthier wine than the Stags Leap version, with loam notes joining plum and dark chocolate. Full-bodied, plush and velvety, it finishes long, with softly dusty tannins. Best After 2023.

93 Points, James Suckling

Aromas of lead pencil, redcurrant, gravel, blackberry and sage. Full-bodied with silky tannins. Lovely depth and complexity here, with a wash of black fruit. Powerful, without being overdone. Delicious. Best after 2024.
