Ridge is a constant critical darling that has been on the top of just about every list you can imagine for well over 50 years. Maybe they are most well known for winning the second enactment of the Tasting of Paris where their Monte Bello not only edged out the Napa Elite but also topped Mouton, Montrose, & Haut-Brion.
With Ridge it’s all about the raw ingredients and there may be no winery in all the world that understands each and every parcel so well. They are true stewards of the land and pioneers of American winemaking, being one of the first and most thorough when it comes to organic and being known as one of if not the best producers of Zinfandel anywhere. There is only one wine that the Ridge team meticulously selects from multiple vineyards as they have since its inception in 2001. This year, they’ve selected 10 vineyard sites. Think of it as California’s answer to CDP. It’s the 2017 Ridge Three Valleys. If you’ve never had a Ridge wine, this is a great gateway. We are selling it at the best price online.

The Three Valleys is Ridge’s general Sonoma County blend, made with fruit from ten different old-vine Zinfandel vineyards throughout Sonoma. The 2017 is comprised of 73% Zinfandel, 15% Petite Sirah, 10% Carignane and 2% Grenache, aged 11 months in 5% new American oak. The 2017 Three Valleys has a medium ruby color with scents of warm apricots and baked peaches, red cherries, blueberries, crushed stone and oodles of floral perfume. The medium-bodied palate offers concentrated, tricolored fruits with juicy acidity and grainy tannins, finishing long and perfumed.

With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2019 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.

On the nose, herbs and lavender dominate, as notes of meat stew swish in the background. As it continues to open up, various black fruits continue to emerge. The palate is marked by bright acids (perfect for fatty cuisine), black cherry and touch of leather. This is a perfect candidate for the cellar and will be a stellar pull over the next decade.
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.

“From the team of Nicolas Glumineau at Pichon Comtesse de Lalande, the 2018 Château De Pez is a gorgeous 2018 that should be on every Bordeaux lover’s radar (and should be a great value as well). Notes of blackcurrants, blueberries, candied violets, and graphite define the bouquet, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, rockingly polished tannins, terrific purity, and a great finish. It’s terrific and is going to have 15-20 years or more of longevity.” -Jeb Dunnuck
