Everybody knows the infamous Ridge Estate Monte Bello. It’s one of the most collectable wines in all of California garnering a perfect 100-point score in three out of the last five vintages and it’s well worth the $300+ price tag.
But for no reason that I can figure out, their estate Cabernet, drawn off that same Monte Bello Vineyard, continues to fly under the radar despite the fact that it is one of the best Cabernets made anywhere in the state and priced well south of its big brother.
Maybe it’s because of how miniscule the Santa Cruz Mountains wine region is with just 1,600 acres under vine, compared with the forty or fifty thousand that Napa now has. Though some are slowly catching on.
Food & Wine’s recent article declared the region “California Wine’s Best Kept Secret”. They added, “Ridge’s Monte Bello Cabernet is a California benchmark, but don’t overlook the winery’s excellent estate Cabernet.”
Well – maybe people are starting to catch up. The Estate Cab just cracked Wine Searcher’s “World’s 10 Most Wanted Cabernets” list.

94 Points, James Suckling
A beautiful, fresh red with blackberry, blueberry and some chocolate. Pine, light toffee and coffee undertones. Dried herbs, too. Medium to full body with intensity and richness. Dusty tannins. Savory finish. Very drinkable now, but even better in 2023.

Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.
The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.
94 Points, Tasting Panel
This is a really exciting new release in the collection of single-vineyards from the Wagner Family, and arguably the most interesting one of the bunch. This is the only Pinot Noir in the Caymus collection that has the advantage of being from a natural Pinot Noir haven in the Russian River Valley. Dairyman Vineyard’s proximity to the pacific ocean, with its morning fog and afternoon coastal breezes allows for an even and elongated growing season, with super concentrated and expressive grape clusters that help make this Dijon clone Pinot Noir one that you need.
