I never know what’s going to happen when I go down to Kentucky. I had another one of those crazy encounters when I was doing a barrel pick at Jefferson’s. My barrel picks at Jefferson’s are always an adventure because Dan, the guy that runs the picks is a complete surfer stoner bro. And yes, he lives in Kentucky. Needless to say, all of his friends are also really interesting characters.
On this visit his buddy, Dave Carpenter from Redemption dropped by just to say “hi”. Turns out Dave is the master blender at Redemption so he’s kind of an important guy to get to know. We hit it off pretty well because in a former life he went to Culinary School and was a chef for 20 years. Dan the C.B.O (chief barrel officer) at Jefferson’s was getting a little miffed because Dave was Bogarting his time.
Don’t worry I spun that into a pretty unique Jefferson’s opportunity. More on that one next week. I landed an appointment with Dave the next day to taste through some of his best barrels. Somehow, I ended up having to cook lunch though. I think he worked me on this one. That said, I snagged an incredible single barrel that was 6 years old. Single barrel selections from Redemption are getting increasingly rarer as their profile is skyrocketing in the bourbon world. This one is bottled at 105 proof.

An absolute gem that we picked out and bottled at 109 Proof. This is why I love high proof bourbon so you can adjust it yourself. I promise you will never taste a bottle like this on your liquor store shelf. This is literally what the Bourbon Buyers Club is all about. My notes on my pick & they are a little “fuzzy” are a combo of sweet vanilla, caramelized banana, graham cracker with a super long velvety finish. This is going to be a hit – I’m guaranteeing it.
Reverdy Ducroux is currently on their 14th generation of Ducroux winemakers operating with parcels right near the town of Verdigny. It’s incredibly prime real estate with rolling hilltops chalk full of rock Kimmeridigian limestone soils, giving a complexity and mineral component to the wines that most others can’t replicate. It’s super pure, with bright citrus notes, a round fleshy mouthfeel, cherry, raspberry and lemon flavors with tremendous balance and a fantastic minerally finish.
95 Points, Wine Enthusiast
“This wine, a regional blend, shows remarkable achievement in winemaking. Wild strawberry and red cherry exude on the entry, alongside floral elements of violet and lilac. Velvety, resolved tannins make it enjoyable from the get-go, layered in acidity for a buoyant lift on the mid-palate and finish, which suggests cinnamon and tea.”

But to find the best values in Priorat, I rely exclusively on the family with the best reputation for making them. They even have a “secret” weapon that they argue is the highest quality Priorat for the money. That’s pretty tough to argue aginst. Pulled from steep slopes at the foot of the Sierra del Montsant, the Secret de Priorat from the Torres Family is a gorgeous blend of Garnacha, Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah made off llicorella slate soils. It’s medium-palate yet delicate with an opaque shade, packed with blackberries, blueberries and spicy peppery notes. It’s compact yet manages to stay velvety and finished polished and long.
