Quinta de Couselo Albarino Rias Baixas 2023

If you’ve never had one of José Manuel Martínez’s wines, you’re in for an absolute treat. There’s a reason he’s made the most Top 100 white wines in the last decade of any Spanish producer.

Jose’s estate, Couselo is located in the northern tip of Portugal in Rias Baixas. It’s a coastal wine, sourced from old and savvy Albariño vines. It’s a terrific wine that mixes wonderful stony minerality with a creamy, long finish that makes it both fantastic with anything from the sea but also just as good with a pre-meal apertif.

The newly released 2023 Albarino is 100% lights out good. You’re not going to find anything better than this in Rias Baixas. It’s so vibrant right from the start – just beaming with energy. What Couselo does best is mix in the minerality, and the saline with a creamy mid-palate – notes of lemon meringue, pineapple, mango, sweet jasmine and green melon with the Atlantic Ocean breeze helping to give this a beauty salty, tantalizing finish that leaves you begging for another sip.

This is electric, saline Albariño with a stony minerality that makes it both fantastic with anything from the sea but also just as good to start any meal as a mouth-watering apertif.

The perfect marriage of wine and cuisine may actually be found in the tiny wine-growing region of Rías Baixas along the Spanish Galician coast. Basically isolated until the 90’s, miniscule family vineyards have been tended for generations with the sole purpose of pairing with the region’s inimitable seafood.

It’s here that – in the southernmost tip of the Rías Baixas – in tiny O Rosal – that we find Quinta de Couselo where they have been making wine since the estate was acquired by Cisterian Monks in 1163. O Rosal is perfectly situated – directly across Minho from Portugal in the Southeast – but still highly influenced by the temperate maritime conditions from the Atlantic Ocean to the west.
