Poggio al Tesoro Mediterra Toscana 2023

Not Yet Rated – 94 Points, James Suckling (2022 Vintage)

This is a show-stopping Super Tuscan from Bolgheri that hits all of the right notes. It’s got a beautiful garnet color with inviting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, and Mediterranean herbs. The Sangiovese brings bright acidity and red fruit elegance, while Syrah adds spice and structure, and Merlot contributes plush texture and dark chocolate notes. Medium to full-bodied with well-integrated tannins, flavors of ripe berries, earth, and a hint of coastal salinity. The finish is long and smooth with lingering notes of dark fruit and subtle oak spice.  Last year’s Mediterra earned 94 points from James Suckling and given how well this is showing already, expectations run high.

Original price was: $30.00.Current price is: $25.00.

Even if you’re unfamiliar with Poggio al Tesoro, the Allegrini family behind it likely rings a bell. They’re one of Italy’s most respected and accomplished winemaking families. Their commitment to sustainability shines through in their gorgeous, sprawling estate, which they manage organically and utilize composting practices.

Poggio al Tesoro sits in the heart of Tuscany’s famed Bolgheri region, home to legendary Super Tuscan names like Ornellaia, Le Macchiole, Tenuta San Guido, and Grattamacco. With such prestigious neighbors, prices in this region typically soar above $60 a bottle. That’s what makes this one such a rare find.

While you might not directly taste the sea in this wine, its proximity to the Mediterranean undeniably plays a role. The wine bursts with freshness and personality, characteristics likely influenced by the coastal influence.
