Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Rare Millesime Brut 2012 (w. Box)

100 Points, James Suckling – 97 Points, Decanter

This is the iconic flagship bottling from Piper-Heidsieck (turned solo act in 2019) that is only released in the finest vintages. Incredibly, it’s aged a full decade on the lees, creating a Champagne that is oozing with concentration, depth and elegance. In the elite 2012 vintage, the breakdown was 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir, mostly taken from Montagne de Reims and Cotes des Blancs. What a sensational sparkler this is. They’re saying this release is as iconic as the Rare Millésime 2002. Whether that’s true or not is hard to say, but one thing is for sure, this baby is perfect. It’s so stinking good that everybody wants to find a vintage to compare it to. If you have a special occasion coming up, I simply don’t think you could find something more elegant. This is a home-run bottling in a league of its own.

100 Points, James Suckling
One of the best 2012s released. This so fresh and transparent, with superb clarity and brightness. Subtle aromas of mangoes, apples, some pie crust and crushed stones that follow through to a medium body with a tight palate and an endless finish. Precise on every level. Haute couture. Sophisticated. What a great Champagne can be. Released in magnum June 2026. Disgorged February 2025. Drink or hold.

97 Points, Decanter
“We haven’t featured three Champagnes for our Top 50 Best In Show in recent years…You can almost smell that tension in the aromatic restraint of this Champagne, but keep looking and you’ll find much to relish, too, including flowers from the Chardonnay and root spice from the Pinot. Age mingles the two seamlessly. Once in the mouth, this is a Champagne of structure and proportion, and it’s here, too, that you can see the skill and restraint with which all the elements have been chamfered and jointed into place.”

What an absolute gem from “The Most Awarded Champagne House of the Century”

Piper-Heidsieck’s worldwide success is attributed to the passion and expertise of its chief winemakers. Cellar Master, Émilien Boutillat is the youngest chef de cave to lead winemaking for a major Champagne House. From top to bottom, the entire operation is run with incredible care and thoughtfulness, setting the industry standard for their procedures and practices. Régis Camus, Chief Winemaker of Piper-Heidsieck, received the prestigious title of “Sparkling Winemaker of the Year”, awarded by the International Wine Challenge jury, eight times since the beginning of the century. It is poured in over 100 countries and is the most awarded Champagne House of the century, with over 275 medals. Their ‘Rare Millesime’ bottlings have become such a force of their own, that in 2019 they actually broke off as their own thing. Whether you know this as a Piper-Heidsieck release or a solo act, one thing is for sure: this is one of, if not the very best Champagne made… especially in special vintages.
