In doing a little digging on the Pighin family, I did learn a lot and it was pretty eye opening. First and foremost, they are one of the pioneers of the Friuli region which is about as hot as it’s ever been right now.. and they’ve been making wine there since Ancient Rome!
Back in the 1960’s the Pighin brothers took over this estate from a noble family. The boys had a hunger for winegrowing and a thirst for constant improvement and the villagers in the area soon took notice.
With a plethora of success within their first decade in charge, the brothers had developed a large following and a little bit of money – which they used over the next twenty years for enhancements.
They figured if they could build the most state-of-the-art winery in the region and acquire a few special estate vineyards, they’d be much better off than relying on contracts for fruit like so many of their neighbors and they could control every stage of the process. Both of those gambles have paid off in a big, big way.

The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.

Every year, Pierre Sparr’s Alsacian Riesling is one of the top scoring wines in the under $20 category. There’s a consistency there and consumers know they can count on a Riesling that is aromatic, fruity, elegant, clean and vibrant. Pierre Sparr wines are extremely food-friendly especially in the highly-regarded 2020 vintage where yields were down but quality rose to an all-time high. It’s a bone-dry beauty with layers of citrus fruits, framed by wet stone and mineral character that adds dimension.
The sandy soil of north Piemonte is home to the appellation Roero and the indigenous variety, Arneis. Stefano Almondo is a master of the rare variety, crafting aromatic and mineral wines that rival any of the best white wines in Italy. The newly released 2021 Vigne Sparse dazzles right out of the bottle; floral and fruity with juicy peaches and apricots yet with a chalky mineral streak as well. As always, it’s such a complex white and the kicker is its finish which goes on for a minute of pure joy.
The newly released 2021 Brunori ‘Le Gemme’ Verdichio is everything you’re looking for in a vibrant, food-friendly white wine. About a billion times better than every-day Pinot Grigio, the Brunori is an electric, vibrant white which combines delicious fruit and vibrancy with boasts a killer nose of white peach, honeycomb and almonds. The fruit is wonderfully concentrated with a salty, stony finish that goes forever. The best part of this beauty is that it’s not just a summer wine- it’s absolutely delicious year round.
