Piccini Sasso Al Poggio Toscana IGT 2019

96 Points, Luca Maroni – 92 Points, Jeb Dunnuck – 92 Points, James Suckling

This classically built Super Tuscan is based on organically farmed Sangiovese that lends bright red fruits along with a silky structure. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot add roundness and power with rich dark fruit and plenty of length. This is such a treat with pasta, pizza, whatever you can cook up – but especially Italian food. It’s just one of those beautiful, classically Italian Toscanos that automatically improves the quality of whatever food it’s on the table with. Perfect for those weeknight dinners when you want to experience one of Tuscany’s greatest modern vintages without breaking the bank.

92 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
Red with a hint of garnet, the 2019 Sasso Al Poggio is ripe with aromas of ripe peaches, strawberry preserve, sweet balsamic herbs, and cedar. Medium to full-bodied, it has ripe tannins with a chalky texture, even acidity, and a clean finish. It is a very charming wine that I would prefer to drink over the next few years.

92 Points, James Suckling
A medium-to full-bodied red with lots of ripe raspberry, cherry, cola and lightly toasted oak character. It’s rich and layered with lots going on. Needs time to come together. So try after 2025.

The Piccini family has been a Tuscan staple since 1882. What started as a modeset 7-hectare little slice of land, has blossomed into a true force. They’ve passed the reigns down for generations, always building on the foundation of their ancestors, trying new things, and pushing the boundaries.

Now in their fourth generation of winemakers and with over 140 years of winemaking history, Piccini could easily rest on their laurels, but that’s the furthest from their minds. Wine Enthusiast recently called them “one of the most dynamic and innovative wineries in Italy” for their continued innovation.
